'The Talk 2012' HR Leadership Summit at VGSoM IIT Kharagpur

The soft stuff is always harder than the hard stuff observed Roger Enrico, Vice Chairman of PepsiCo. By soft stuff he was referring to the pronominal turf of Human Resource Management.

In recent times, there has been many alterations in the ever evolving zone of organizational structure and dynamics, inclusive of HR Management. The HR domain has shifted its focus from administrative tasks of hire and fire to matters of strategic importance. In purview of the above, Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur decided to have a session with the seasoned members of the HR fraternity. Thereby, the HR Leadership Summit, The Talk 2012 was organized on 4th of August.


On the Agenda of the Summit were a workshop on Leading through turbulent times, followed by a Panel Discussion and a Case Study Presentation by the Students. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Ayan Banerji, Partner, Edxcare Learning Services. With some very interactive group activities, the prerequisites of being a good leader were stressed upon by Mr. Banerji. It saw a very enthusiastic participation from the students. Moreover, the tasks ensured that they were learning by doing.


The Panel Discussion on New Strides in HRM was attended by some very elite and distinguished guests, viz. Mr. Sujoy Banerjee, President, National HRD Network, Kolkata Chapter & Group HR and OD, McNally Bharat; Mr. Uday Guha, VP, Business HR, Mining Business, Aditya Birla Group; Ms. Mridula Sankhyayan, VP, Human Capital Management, Goldman Sachs and Mr. Ayan Banerji, Partner, Edxcare Learning Services. The moderator for the same was Dr. M. Venkatesan, Associate Professor, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade.


Dr. Venkatesan opened the discussion with a brusque introduction of the topic. He segregated the discussion in terms of four focal points pertinent to HR management, viz. Performance Management, Impact and Suggestive usages of Social Media, striking a delicate balance between Work and Life, Ethics and values. Furthermore, the speakers also talked about their respective organizations and the challenges they face.


Speaking about Performance Management, Mr. Sujoy Banerjee was of the view that owing to the right sizing environment, organization are not in favour of carrying baggage and expect performance from day 1. Mr. Uday Guha talked about developing a leadership pipeline and to be wary of employees who were actively disengaged and undermined the achievements of others (popularly termed as CAVE). Ms. Mridula Sankhyayan stressed upon the need to delegating mundane work to automation and a level playing field for all, including women and differently abled people. Mr. Ayan Banerji spoke about the necessity of alignment between the organizations and the individuals ethics and values. Once each speaker had a chance to speak, the moderator concluded and declared the discussion open for Q&A. Some very intriguing questions were put up by the audience.


After the panel discussion, a presentation on a Case Study Analysis on Role of HR in Change Management was conducted. The judges for the same were Dr. M. Venkatesan and Dr. Parama Barai, Assistant Professor, VGSoM. Five finalist teams presented in front of the judges and one winner and two runners up were declared by Dr. M. Venkatesan. To sum it up, it was a day well spent with some stalwarts of the HR domain and an enriching experience for the VGSoMites.
