Inmates at Dasna Jail in the Gaziabad district will now have a better chance to improve their skills and knowledge, thanks to the efforts of BIMTECH students..
Through their innovative outreach program, BIMTECH helped to establish a 4,000 volume automated library facility at the jail for prisoners to use.
The library is the result of a four-month joint effort by Dr. Vrijesh Sharma, jail superintendent, Dasna Jail and BIMTECH students and staff led by Dr. Rishi Tiwari, librarian.
At the official opening March 17, Dr. Sharma stressed the need to help prison inmates upgrade their skills and knowledge prior to their release to enable them to find suitable work. Establishing a fully-automated library, with a wide variety of books on all subjects was an essential first step in that direction, he said.
BIMTECH Director Dr. H. Chaturvedi said the institute plans to make proposals to offer prisoners training in different trades and vocations and is actively discussing steps to take toward prisoner rehabilitation with the national skill development corporation.
A. K. Panda, IPS and DIG Prisons commended BIMTECH for initiating this project, urged inmates to use the library to help improve their lives and pointed to the need for prisoners to boost their education by taking examinations offered by distance learning institutions. Dr. Chaturvedi offered to help authorities establish the needed examination centers.
BIMTECHs Professor K. R. Chari noted a team of faculty and students is working to improve waste management at the jail and looking at making bio fertilizers from the food waste at the jail kitchen, a product Dr. Chaturvedi has offered to buy. Other opportunities he mentioned were in the areas of using of renewable energy and the use of roti making machines.
