IIM Lucknow SPICMACAY Chapter begins its journey with a stellar performance by Abhay Rustum Sopori, the accomplished Santoor player and Music Composer and son of legendary Santoor player, Padmashri Pandit Bhajan Sopori. The chapter, that begun this July, aims to sensitize the younger generation to the glorifying Indian culture.
SPIC MACAY is a voluntary, non-profit and non-governmental movement started in 1977 to create awareness amongst Indian youth about India’s rich cultural heritage. The movement has now taken root and established its formidable presence in over 150 cities in India and 30 cities abroad. The movement draws strength from the dynamic and pulsating vitality of the youth reminding them of their roots and identity and impelling them into being the custodians of this beautiful heritage.
Abhay Rustum Sopori captivated the young audience with his enthralling performance in which he was accompanied by Durjoy Bhowmick on tabla and Shabbir Ahmadon tanpura. “His performance was breathtaking and definitely opened me up to Indian classical music” said Manish Bahetii, a second year student of IIM Lucknow. “What drew me to this performance was the sufiana tradition of Santoor that Abhay Rustum Sopori is known to play” said Kapil Thukral a Hindustani Classical vocalist by training and a first year student at IIM Lucknow. The event was attended by around 200 students from both first and second years and the chief guest of the performance was Prof. Shailendra Singh.
Speaking about the performance the Professor said “It is really great that SPIC MACAY is organizing events like these which showcase to the youth the true Indian culture”. “We believe Virasats like these help cajole the youth into being the custodians of their beautiful and rich musical heritage” said Shalin Gupta, member of the SPIC MACAY IIM Lucknow Chapter.
Kashmiri evening, the event was inaugurated by Prof. Shailendra Singh and Abhay Rustum Sopori when they lighted the traditional “Deep”. This was followed by Abhay Rustum Sopori’s performance on Santoor.
