MDI organizes roundtable for partnership for inclusive employment

The Management Development Institute (MDI) and SARTHAK, an NGO working for the employment of the Persons with Disability (PWD), organized a roundtable for the Hospitality Sector on Partnership for Inclusive Employment (PIE) to be acquainted with the life of People with Disability (PWDs). The conference was focused at the Hospitality Sector to recognize job opportunities for ‘People with hearing impairment’.


Experience has shown that Persons with Disability, especially people with hearing impairment have a high scope of being employed in the hospitality sector. Many organizations like YUM, Lemon tree, Devyani International, ITC etc are employing Persons with Disability while there are also some who are willing to employ Persons with Disability but, are either confused or reluctant as to what and to what extent a disabled candidate can work.


MDI has been helping Corporates and NGOs in actualizing the value of “Inclusive Growth”. Sarthak, founded by Dr. Jitender Aggarwal, dentist by profession who lost his vision, has been doing excellent work in both training PWD and enabling companies to design suitable work stations for them.


MDI and Sarthak Education Trust jointly welcomed the participants and congratulated the gathering for the work NGOs, corporate and professionals were doing and assured of all possible commitment of MDI and Sarthak to this initiative.


The key note speakers at the event were Mr. Jayesh Ranjan, Secretary-Tourism, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Santhosh Unnikrishnan, Chief Executive Officer, Costa Coffee India Ltd. Mr. Rohit Mallick, Regional Manager South, Learning Services, ITC Hotels, Mr. R Hari, General Manager HR, Lemon Tree Hotels and Red Fox Hotels and Ms. Balpreet Kaur Grover, HR Manager, Costa Coffee, Devyani International Ltd. They presented their hiring policies and the organizational changes they brought for inclusive employment.


Dr. Jitender Agarwal from Saarthak talked about the capabilities of PWD and why they should be hired by organizations in the hospitality sector. Post which PWD shared their experiences on how life changed for them as they started working in organizations.


Renowned film makers, Mr. Mahesh Bhatt and Mr. Ajay Kanchan, were specials guests at the roundtable. Mr. Bhatt shared his experience of being a dyslexic as a child and said that PWD have a lot of potential and there is no lack of talent but there is lack of talent to find that talent.


About 45 representatives from leading organizations in the hospitality sector including TAJ Hotels, The Oberoi, ITC Hotels, Lemon Tree, KFC, Costa Coffee, Westin, Trident, Crowne Plaza, The Leela, Tulip Inn etc. were present to share their experiences working with PWD. Dr V P Singh, leading human resources team at R J Corp, addressed queries at the open forum about sustainability of PWD candidates and whether they were competitive in nature.

Conference ended with the presentations by a short film on real life shots from working lives of PWD and as the conference proceeded, the representatives from the industry shared their views on special abilities they demonstrated at YUM, Lemon tree, ITC Hotels, KFC, Costa Coffee and various others companies.
