Jairam Ramesh's Comment on IIM, IIT Faculty: Political Parties Play Safe

May 30,2011

Human Resources and Development Minister Kapil Sibal disagreed with Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh’s comments on IIM and IIT faculty, saying these institutions are ‘world class’ due to their students and not because of their research or faculty.

In his counter remark, Sibal said, “if the IITs have not gained the critical mass to change the global scientific discourse, it is because of the "ecosystem" and not because of the faculties.

According to HRD Minister Kapil Sibal, the 25 per cent of the IIT faculty are students of IIT. Therefore, it is quiet obvious that the ‘world class’ students will make world class faculty.

Congress chose to remain silent and distant itself from the controversy over Jairam Ramesh comment and said these premier institutions have made relevant contributions to academics in the country.

AICC spokesperson, Manish Tewari said, “I do not know in what context and what circumstances Jairam Ramesh has made the remarks. Whether it has been taken in context or out of context, he is the best person to be really be able to answer this question." But he added, "So far as IIMs and IITs are concerned, there is no question or ambiguity about their contribution to Indian academia and even to building some of the prime institutions around the world."

Without missing the opportunity to slam Congress and Jairam Ramesh, BJP spokesman Rajiv Rudy said, "BJP wants to say categorically that it is proud of our IITs and IIMs." He emphasized his statement saying that there is hardly any Fortune 500 company which is not headed by or had a senior position occupied by an IIT or IIM alumni.

I strongly agree with Jairam Ramesh comment on IIM & IIT Faculty because:

The student selected in this institute are brilliant, so there not much work to be done with this student to improve them but if this institute faculty want to show their ability then they should give admission a below or average student and make them diamond then only everyone will come to know about this institutes ability. Working with brilliant is easy instead of that work with poor student is real challenge.

So I strongly agree with Jairam Ramesh comment
