Finance doesnt seem to be seasons hottest choicethe fresh MBA graduates looks more interested in taking up consulting opportunities, rather than all-time favorite, finance. The Boston Consulting Group and McKinsey & Co are on record hiring this placement season, while there are few offers from traditional top recruiters, investment banks and financial firms.
BCG recruited 17 grads at Cluster 1 of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad against last years 11 hirings at IIMA campus. Ravi Srivastava, Partner and Director at the firm said, BCG recruited 17 PGP students from IIM Ahmedabad this year. IIMA continues to be one of our core campuses for recruitment and we look forward to continue recruiting large numbers, in line with our rapid business growth.
Another consulting giant McKinsey picked 17 students from Indian School of Business (ISB) Hyderabad and also recruited in good numbers at IIMA. Companies like Bain & Co, AT Kearney, Accenture and Oliver Wyman also visited IIM-A campus in Cluster 1.
An IIM-A alumni stated that consulting companies have offered salaries between Rs 22 lakh and Rs 27 lakh for domestic roles this year.
Consulting companies are turning out to be a savior in tough placements season this year. The placement scenario in b-schools so far suggests that there will be fewer recruiters, fewer jobs and lower salaries at campuses. Top b-schools have been preparing their student for a tough placement year by lowering their expectations. Many b-schools also took placement consulting companies route to get their students placed.
B-School like IIM Calcutta, XLRI Jamshedpur, SPJIMR Mumbai, and IRMA are already done with final placements 2012. IIM Calcutta though continued to reaffirm its status of finance campus; it also saw remarkable interest by consulting companies recruiting in good numbers.
IIM Bangalore chose to conduct Final Placement interviews during weekends this year starting February 18 till 26. The final placement process at majority of b-schools is expected to end by March first week.
