Companies from Diverse Sectors Offer Senior Management Level Positions to PGPX and PMP Students of IIM Ahmedabad

The Fourth class of PGPX, the 1 year full time program for experienced managers at IIMA, graduated on March 27, 2010. Launched in 2006-07, PGPX program admits experienced professionals from diverse industries.

It has a general management focus, with an emphasis on leadership across borders and cultures. A program on the same lines, the PGP-PMP, started in 2007-08 focuses on experienced managers working in the public infrastructure and services space.

Both these programs follow a "rolling" placement, unlike the fixed duration placements for entry level programs. At present, many of the participants have accepted roles which include, among others, a CEO, a SVP, 3 VP, 10 GM, 1 Director, 8 AVP, 16 strategic consulting roles, and several senior manager positions. This year too, diverse recruiters - MNCs, Indian business houses and SMEs venturing into new businesses, have sought to recruit, including IBM, McKinsey, Google, Deloitte, Nokia-Siemens Networks, Amazon, Hero Honda, Polaris, Welspun, NISG, RPG, Marg Infrastructure, VBHC, L&T and IL&FS. 5 PGPX participants, who started their own businesses in energy, services and IT, have opted out of placement.

While salaries on offer have risen compared to 2009, participants have so far turned down 43 offers in favor of cross-functional, strategy, marketing and functional/BU head roles. 11 PGPX and 5 PMP participants have not yet accepted offers, seeking roles and companies that fit their experience, skills and career path choices. The Institute placement office continues to support their career plans by facilitating interaction with firms with the appropriate requirements, till all are placed in roles of their choice.

According to Saral Mukherjee, placement chairperson “We are very happy to note that firms have increasingly started to look at IIMA for filling up senior management level positions. It shows rising awareness among the recruiter community that there is more to campus recruitment than entry level hiring”.

Its a great news. The industry is back on track after recession.1 year PGPEX programs are a norm in Europe and catching up faster in India. In India ISB,Hyderabad set the trend way back in 2001 and IIM's followed suite.IIMA was the first IIM to start one year PGPX.IIMC came out with PGPEX and PGPEX-VLM.In USA 2 years MBA is still a preferred option. After 5-10 years of industry, one year MBA makes sense as one prefers to go back to industry faster.
