Mutual Funds as an Investment Avenue - Interactive session with Mr. Sandesh Kirkire

Today, when the whole world is smitten by the epidemic of recession, or rather the over usage of the term in many ways; principles, beliefs and habits of an investor have witnessed a total breakdown leading to a state of confusion. Times are such when the different investment options lose out on ways to convince the investor, that why the set plan is the most lucrative option at one's disposal and has the potential to boost savings through optimum return on investment. To throw light on one such option (Mutual Funds), JBIMS hosted Mr. Sandesh Kirkire (CEO, Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Company).

The session was organized to provide a platform to augment the knowledge of the students of the batch of 2010 in the domain of financial services, and thereby enable them in cementing their fundamental understanding. Mr. Kirkire, an alumnus of Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies from the batch of 1990, started with touching upon the operation of the financial system as a whole, and brought about a comparative picture between the systems in India, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Having a vast experience of close to two decades in the fields of corporate finance and treasury management, Mr. Kirkire embarked onto a detailed account of the different pillars of the financial services sector of India. After working in different capacities in the Kotak Mahindra group, he later joined the Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Company in 1999 as the head of Fixed Income Funds Management, from where he took over the reigns as the CEO in the year 2005, the position which he currently holds. Mr. Kirkire kept the audience engrossed, by throwing light on the New Pension Scheme which is the topic that's doing the rounds, and its various implications. He then gave an overview of the mutual fund industry in India, and provided insights on concepts such as the difference between insurance products and mutual funds, and their tax implications in brief.

Answering to a question, Mr. Kirkire spelt out the distribution challenges on the part of the institutions dealing in mutual funds, and the presence of the different channels and hierarchy that has been put to use in India along with their breakup. The questions posted by students were met with an equal delight in answering them, as was witnessed in the detailed explanation comforting one's basic understanding of the concepts and the current happenings in the domain of financial services.

It turned out to be a grand success not only on the count of domain orientation, but also putting all the apprehensions of the students in terms of the prevalent situation all over the world to rest, by making them focus on sharpening their fundamental concepts and understanding their vitalities. The session left students asking for more of such sessions, and maintain the tradition of Bajaj alive in the outside world through people like Mr. Kirkire and many more such eminent industrial experts gracing the campus.

Concluded.
