Speaks at SPJIMR Mumbai on

"Leadership In Changing Context"

"The only good thing about this uncertain future is that you can shape it."

- Charles Handy

"Being able to predict the state of affairs, even over the next couple of quarters, let alone next couple of years, is a reasonably good achievement for most corporates considering the state of flux that the global business environment is in." So began Mr. Prateek Kumar, Corporate VP, WIPRO Corporation. The setting - a guest lecture on "Leadership in Changing Context", the audience - a packed house of budding managers from India's premier B-school S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai.

Mr. Prateek Kumar has been associated with WIPRO for the last 13 years. During his tenure as Vice President, Talent Engagement and Development, WIPRO Technologies had the honor of being the first company to be assessed at Level 5 on PCMM framework. Mr. Kumar was one of the champions of the initiative.

Mr. Kumar opined that henceforth uncertain global environment will drive conservative decision making, and the best way organizations can gear up for the challenge is on the strength of the ability of its people. To further substantiate the changing character of business he said that earlier price for any offering was something determined by the company but now it's the sole prerogative of the market/customer. And so to ensure the same levels of profitability, one has to look at the cost aspect of business-more driven towards striving internal efficiency.

Enumerating the various leadership characters for changing business environment he laid stress on attributes like strategic thinking, problem solving, building star performers and teams, setting and leaving up to aggressive commitments, customer orientation, innovation, global thinking and acting, self confidence and unending commitment to excellence. Citing his personal example he said that leadership vision at WIPRO involved Business Leadership, Customer Leadership, People and finally Brand Leadership. He wrapped the day's proceedings with a memorable salvo that the ROI on Personal capital always exceeds that on any other form.
