Dean of Kellogg's Talks
About Furture of Management Education

at SJMSOM, IIT Bombay
6th January , 2005

Prof. Dipak C. Jain has been Dean of the Kellogg School of Management since July 2001. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics and statistics in 1976 and his master's degree in mathematical statistics in 1978 from Gauhati University in India. He has done his PhD in marketing from the University of Texas. His research areas include cross-cultural issues in product diffusion, marketing of high tech. products, new product diffusion, market segmentation etc.

He received the prestigious Sidney Levy Award for excellence in teaching as well as the Jawaharlal Nehru Merit Award apart from many other awards and honors.

Prof. Dipak Jain emphasizes that the purpose of any B-school must be to produce socially responsible global leaders. Knowledge creation, dissemination and certification together form the package that any premier b-school offers. The most efficient manner of doing so is to make the students co-partners in value creation, through the development of mentally stimulating projects and products along with their advisors. Thought leadership, project leadership and civic leadership are the key determinants of the career graph of any M.B.A. student since social responsibility is an implicit trait in management students.

Apart from knowledge creation, if these business schools take part in policy formulations at various levels and have interaction with government bodies, it will go a long way in making a difference to the global community. According to him, though the best business schools in India are quickly bridging the gap between themselves and premier schools abroad, more emphasis is to be given to the changing milieu and they must quickly re-position themselves to cater to the demand. New offerings like real-estate management and hospital management are just some of the few things he suggests that the schools should now concentrate on.
