"CEO Speak" at DoMS IIT Madras

Mr. Pradeep Kumar - CEO, Sara Lee Household & Body Care India Pvt. Ltd. - was the speaker for the quarterly event "CEO Speak" at the Department Of Management Studies, IIT Madras.

The talk focused on "FMCG Marketing in India", considering India a different market than other Asia Pacific countries. Mr. Pradeep Kumar mentioned that India, with such varied demographics, was a very interesting market to venture in for any FMCG company. "A strong supply chain, advertising and good brand building exercises are important in making a brand successful," he said. Talking about advertising he mentioned how ad campaigns do not make the grade just because the ad appeals to a particular region and does not click in other region because of cultural backgrounds and emotional attachments.

Mentioning supply chain as an important aspect of marketing, he said, "70% of India's population is still rural, companies should identify this market and build very strong supply chain to reach out to all the people". Reiterating the fact that India being such a diverse market, a product could have functionalities, which the product is not meant to serve giving example about talcum powders used by tyre garages and antiseptic liquids used for other purposes than just healing wounds. He said, "Advertising could include additional functionalities and cash on them if they can drive up the sales".

The session was then open for questions from the student's side, which were answered by Mr. Pradeep Kumar.
