Delhi, February 14, 2005
(CoolAvenues News Wire)

Almost a year and a quarter after the HRD under Murli Manohar Joshi's regime made efforts to make the premier MBA at IIMs more affordable, a lot of discussion followed and a lot of controversy was generated, but finally the IIMs have become at least available to more people through new introduced courses and additional seats to some of the existing courses. The IIMs have also increased the quota of the need-based financial assistance to a record amount of around 2.35 crore in the current academic year.

The decision for more seats was taken by IIM directors in response to the current HRD Minister Arjun Singh's directive to broad-base activities in accordance to the changing economy. Most of these additions will be implemented in the coming academic session.

The most sought for and popular PGP program has the highest number of additional seats, as IIM Bangalore has upgraded infrastructure that can accommodate around 80 additional students to the Post Graduate Programme in Management. Similarly, the total number of seats in Post Graduate Programme in Management at IIM Kozhikode will move up to 180 from 120. The Post-Graduate Programme in Agri-business Management at IIM-Lucknow will have some 30 seats added. Software Enterprise Management is another programme at IIM Bangalore that will have additional 30 seats.

The Executive and Fellow programmes also have some additions as IIM Indore will have around 40 more seats in its executive Post Graduate Programme in Management, and the Fellow Programmes in Management and Development at IIM Ahmedabad will also increase size to 20 and 40 seats against the present 15 and 30 seats.

Some new courses in the offing are:

  • Executive MBA at IIM Ahmedabad (50 seats)

  • Global Managers (one year course) at IIM Ahmedabad (30 seats)

  • One Year programme on Leading and Managing at IIM Ahmedabad (80 seats)

  • One Year Programme for the Development of Entrepreneurs at IIM Calcutta (300 seats)

  • Six-month Certificate Programme in Management for Defence officers at Noida Campus of IIM Lucknow (50 seats)

  • Executive MBA Programme via the distant education module at IIM Kozhikode (100 Seats)

In a meeting held in June 2004 under the chairmanship of HRD Minister Arjun Singh, the Chairman and Directors of IIMs had assured that no student will face difficulty in pursuing his studies due to lack of financial resources. Keeping to the decision taken, the six IIMs have provided a record amount of about Rs. 2.35 Crores need-based financial assistance to the students in the current academic year. IIM Ahmedabad tops the list by providing around Rs. 69.78 lakhs in assistance, followed by IIM Bangalore - around Rs. 58.08 Lakhs, IIM Lucknow - around Rs. 43. 70 Lakhs, IIM Kozhikode - around Rs. 26 Lakhs, IIM Calcutta - around Rs. 20.5 Lakhs and IIM Indore - around Rs. 16.50 Lakhs.
