SAMIKSHA 2004 Held at NITIE, Mumbai

In continuation with the ongoing Samiksha 2004 series in NITIE, Mumbai, this time the focus was on Retailing. Eminent personalities from the field of Marketing and Retailing were invited to speak on the topic, "Retail Marketing - The Challenges Ahead".

The speakers gracing the occasion were: -

  1. Mr. Sujit Das Munshi, Executive Director, AC Nielsen ORG-MARG India

  2. Mr. G. Dhananjayan, VP (Sales and Marketing), Orange, Hutchison Max Ltd.

  3. Mr. Mohanty, Chief Manager, Retail, IOCL

  4. Ms. Sudipta Sen Gupta, Head-Marketing, Cafe Coffee Day

  5. Moderator - R. Jaggannathan, Senior Associate Editor, Business Standard & Editor, Indian Management

The proceedings of the session started with a presentation by Mr. Das Munshi on "Indian Retail Landscape". The point emphasized was that modern trade contributed to just 5% of retail trade. So the opportunities, which lie ahead, are vast and the challenges that are to be faced in terms of increasing the consumption of the number of SKUs is also huge.

This was followed by an overview of petroleum retailing presented by Mr. Mohanty. He presented the challenges which lie ahead in terms of meeting customer expectations in terms of service, quality and innovative ways for increasing loyalty of the customers.

Then Mr. Dhananjay gave an insight into the key aspects of telecom marketing and how the telecom market had evolved over the period of time and how Orange is meeting the challenges, which are arising with respect to visibility, loyalty, affordability and profitatbility.

Ms. Sengupta gave an overview of the coffee industry over the period and how it has evolved post liberisation and "Café Coffee Day" has matured into a fledging industry.

The presentations were followed by deliberation between the panel members on the topic moderated by Mr. Jagannath. An interactive Q&A session followed thereafter with the students which included questions on the challenges faced when the retailer became the manufacturer, how to reduce the tendency to commodities, how collaborative retailing would help and the impact of VAT on the retailing segment.

The proceedings ended with a vote of thanks to the distinguished panelists.
