Jamshedpur, February 9, 2005

The Finance Association of XLRI, FINAX organized an interactive session on the topic "Careers in Forex, Risk management and Derivatives Market" with Mr. K. N. Venkatraman, a distinguished alumnus from the 1990 batch of Business Management. Mr. K. N. Venkatraman owns a Strategic Consulting firm related to Risk Management in Delaware, USA. The interactive session was held through a video-conference.

The session kicked off with Mr. K. N. Venkataraman aka KNV giving a background of his career path. KNV began his finance career with SBI in India in 1990. This was followed by a short stint with Standard Chartered after which he left for Hong Kong. It was in Hong Kong that he was exposed to automated currency trading. Having become interested in this field, he then left for Canada to join the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Toronto. In RBC, he held the positions of an Investment Derivatives Analyst, Treasury Market Risk Manager and also looked after the Financial Engineering Operations of the bank. KNV termed the area of Commodity and Forex derivatives as the most rewarding and the one that gave him recognition in RBC.

The introduction was followed by a small talk by him outlining the latest in-things in the global financial services domain. The later half of the session saw the finance enthusiasts of XLRI approaching Mr. K. N. Venkatraman with their questions.

Some of the questions asked were related to the opportunities in Finance in India and in the International arena. Mr. K. N. Venkatraman said that Finance careers are diverse and it is a very wide field. He said, "India has opened its markets now but still on a global scale, it is only a small pie. Nevertheless, the options are plenty. For global careers, it is essential that one makes a mark in one's job in the early years itself. This helps in getting postings abroad. This is especially the case with international banks."

When asked about the growth areas in exchanges, K. N. Venkatraman said that the exchanges (Indian) are growing and there will be growth areas associated with these. With growing exchanges and global economies, the shift is towards integration with global exchanges. He also said that in India, the equity market is developing fast and as a matter of fact, there are better circuit breakers that have been designed here to protect the small investors.
