Expert Speaks on Leadership at XLRI, Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, February 25, 2005: Ms. Barbara Wamsley, Principal of Leadership Management Institute in the United States visited the campus on 24th February 2005 to interact with the students of XLRI. She visited the campus, courtesy the American Center at Kolkata. Apart from being a distinguished researcher, she is also a writer and consultant on Leadership and Change. She has worked at senior levels in the US Federal Government and is also a recipient of the "Outstanding Public Service Award".

Ms. Wamsley spoke on "Leading People in Change: Empowerment, Commitment and Accountability".

Ms. Wamsley's speech began with the role of a new variable called behavior in leadership, the other variables being mission, values and expectations. She gave examples of how behavior was the variable, which was at times responsible for the final "outcome".

"Commitment begins with the individual. He must be a cross-functional person, a jack-of-all-trades. He must always attempt to lead rather than manage. Leaders must maintain a clear HR strategy. HR is most important since organizations can buy equipment easily but buying people is not possible. Any competitive industry would value its human resources as a priceless asset." She said.

Ms. Wamsley also stressed on the need of empowerment and warned that if there is no clear HR strategy, there would be no empowered workforce.

The speech was marked by humor and quick witted replies to questions posed by XLRI students, which Ms. Wamsley answered very patiently and to everyone's satisfaction.

Prof. Mathai Baker Fenn, faculty, Organisational Behaviour, XLRI, said that the speech was a learning experience for him. He said he learnt numerous new facts himself. The function concluded with student representative, Mr. Jishnu Dasgupta, thanking Ms. Barbara Wamsley for spending time at the XLRI campus and wishing her a safe journey back home.

Concluded.
