Response to the Union Budget 2005 from ISB, Hyderabad

Hyderabad, February 28, 2005: The Indian School of Business is quite excited about some of the initiatives announced by the Finance Minister today. Expressing his opinion on the Budget, Professor M. R. Rao, Dean, Indian School of Business, said, "I am very happy to see the Finance Minister's initiative in proposing the Manufacturing Competitiveness Programme. It is indeed timely and encouraging. We are setting up a new Centre of Excellence - the Centre for Manufacturing, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, and have initiated research in collaboration with other international institutions to study the emergence of the Indian manufacturing sector as a competitive force. I hope that we will be able to contribute to the Government's initiative soon.'

Professor Rao also remarked that the proposal for setting up the National Institute of Securities Market is a welcome step and will be helpful in promoting research and bringing in transparency in the Indian capital market. He also felt that the special fund allocation to the IIS to raise its stature to be a world class University is an excellent idea and that it should be done without curtailing the institution's autonomy.

Mudit Kapoor, Assistant Professor of Business, ISB, remarked, "The government's thrust in increasing the role of microfinance is laudable. Opening up ECB for NGOs, enhancing the crop insurance scheme and microcredit facilities are a sure way of reaching out to the rural poor both in terms of availability of funds and in reaching the target group." Mudit Kapoor brings with him considerable experience in research at the World Bank. He has been actively involved in setting up IT enabled services through a kiosk-based revenue model in association with Drishtee, an NGO. Kapoor is also involved in research activities in Micro Financing at the ISB's Centre for Analytical Finance.

Concluded.
