Manufacturing Stalwarts Visit NITIE, Mumbai

Mumbai, February 23, 2005: Continuing the firm bonding between the industry and NITIE, this time a team from INTEL USA came down to the NITIE campus. The purpose of the visit was not only to address the students but also to interact with the faculty regarding the latest trends in Supply Chain Management.

Mr. Ajay Sevak and Mr. Jim Cameron were the two people from Intel, USA. After having a brief session with the faculty, the distinguished guests addressed the students. They discussed the supply chain at Intel and how it differs with respect to other IT companies. Various concepts and fundamentals that are in vogue were also discussed pertaining to Capacity Planning, Equipment improvement, Productivity improvement, Data Analysis, Automation and Simulation Model Building. They also explained production planning and Scheduling at Intel through various examples. Mr. Jim Cameron also opined that Supply Network Planning is an integrated function in Intel.

This was followed by a healthy Question and Answer session. The session concluded with the vote of thanks by Prof. Ashok K. Pundir, Associate Dean (Placements), NITIE. The guests then rounded off their visit with a trip round the campus including the Computer labs and the world class Ergonomics laboratory. They were much impressed with the serene and exquisite sylvan surroundings of NITIE with the lake close by.

Visit was also made by a very high profile team from The Timken Company, which included Mr. W. R. Timken, Jr. himself along with Mr. Gordon Robinson (MD-India) and Ms. Chitra Aiyar (communication expert). Mr. Timken, a native of Canton, Ohio, is a graduate of Phillips Andover Academy at Andover, Massachusetts, Stanford University and the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. Mr. Timken first worked for the Timken Company as a summer associate in 1958 and began his full-time career at Timken in 1962. Currently, he is the Chairman, Board of Directors of the Timken Company.

Mr. Timken started by talking about his early days at the Timken Company and how he brought about changes there. He talked about the challenges faced by the organizations today from the customers, competitors and the government and the need of highly qualified people to meet such challenges. With respect to India, Mr. Timken said that a good government would be the key to the growth of the private sector. He also pointed out that increasing population and corruption were the biggest obstacles in India's growth today and how a combined effort from both the public and the private sector is required to overcome them.

Apart from this Mr. Timken also emphasized the importance of the manufacturing sector and how it was as challenging and rewarding as the other sectors such as FMCG, Banking etc. The function concluded with a vote of thanks from Prof. D. S. Hegde, Dean (Academics), NITIE.
