HR Continuum Held at SJMSOM, IIT Bombay

Previous

The HR Continuum ended with an extremely enlightening panel discussion on the topic "HR Heads: Future CEOs". The distinguished panel members were Mr. Kr. Sekhar (Head - Procurement, Logistics and Distribution) Bayer CropScience Ltd., Mr. N. Dharmarajan, (VP-HR) KEC International Ltd. and Mr. Marcel Parker (President - HR) Raymond Ltd. The discussion was moderated by Prof. D. B. Phatak, Head, Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management.

Panel members had disparate views about the possibility of HR managers becoming CEOs and all of them gave cogent arguments in support of their views. The discussion analyzed the topic from several perspectives resulting in a valuable knowledge sharing exercise for audience. The discussion concluded with the consensus that the set of demonstrated capabilities for becoming a CEO are more than those of a conventional HR manager and that an HR manager can become a good CEO if he acquires these skills in addition to his existing inter-personal skills. It was rightly pointed out in the discussion, no matter what is outsourced, the heart still remains, the human element. Rethinking the HR paradigm in the light of increasing importance of the people asset is all that is needed for the HR person to become CEO.

Concluded.
