IIM Calcutta Hosting Annual International Business Festival 'Intaglio'
Highlights of Intaglio Day 1

Previous

The prelims for the event consisted of three rounds - Data Modeling, Credit Risk Evaluation and Securitization. With over 165 entries from 25 institutes, including the best across the world, the event attracted huge crowds.
The cumulative scores of the rounds decided the top 6 teams for the final round of presentations at IIMC, during Intaglio, on the 5th of January, 2007 - from XLRI, SP Jain, FMS, and host IIM Calcutta. The final presentations were judged by Mr. Anunay Gupta, Sr. VP - Citibank GDM, Bangalore and Prof. Vinod Kothari, visiting faculty, IIM Calcutta, with a wide experience of teaching in all the IIMs. The teams from IIM Calcutta stole the show by winning all the prizes.

Several other eliminations rounds viz. Fair Trade, State of Affairs, Addict, Bangalored, Consulting Knights and Econometrix were also held. The tough competition saw only the very best of teams get through. Clearly, Day 2 is poised to be even more exciting!!!

Reverberations Lecture by Mr. Sunil Alagh, CEO of Britannia

The opening session of the Reverberations Lecture Series was given by Mr. Sunil Alagh, CEO of Britannia, and also an alumnus of IIM Calcutta. His talk was a delightful mix of subtle jokes, profound career and life insights drawn from his distinguished career and his memories of his days as a student at IIMC. Based on real examples, he brought out some of his fundamental insights. "Play on your strength, do not simply follow the competitor," he said.

On the subject of corporate performance evaluation, he said "Measure yourself based on what you actually do for the customer and not what you produce." Using anecdotes from the Mahabharata, he said that one must have not only an entry strategy but also an exit strategy to succeed in the field of business. While he corroborated the widely touted concept of innovation in industry, he emphasized the importance of teamwork and the need to outsource functions outside of a corporation's core strengths. This would not only facilitate more effective innovation but also make the organization as a whole more efficient. He ended with a note on luck. "Luck is what happens when preparedness meets opportunity," he said. Mr. Alagh's good sense of humor and interesting discourse kept the audience fully captivated.
