Stefano Pelle Enlightens Students at IMI, India

The morning of 14th July, Thursday, saw IMI, India welcoming Mr. Stefano Pelle, Managing Director, Perfetti Van Melle to the campus once again. It's been a constant endeavor of the institute to encourage interface between corporate leaders of today and tomorrow. IMI regularly invites corporate leaders to visit its campus and participate in interactive seminars and guest lectures like these, which always leave students asking for more.

Perfetti Van Melle is the third largest confectionary company with market capitalization of 1.5 bn. It set up shop in India in 1994, which is now its second largest market after Italy. Its two plants, Manesar near Delhi and the other in Chennai, together produce 40,000 tonnes of confectionery per year. In 2005, the company would invest about Rs. 30 crore to add another 6,000 - 7,000 tonnes per annum. Its expected revenues are Rs. 400 crores. It already markets brands such as Chlor Mint, Center Fresh, Alpenliebe and Mentos in the gum and sugar confectionery business.

Its no secret that innovation is the key to survival today but Mr. Pelle was effective in bringing out the obstacles which might result in failure of extremely innovative products through his case study of Big Babool vs. Boomer. His talk helped students to widen their understanding of the term 'innovation' which extends beyond production to marketing and promotion. Through his product Big Babool, he emphasized that innovation not only needs to be continuous but all pervasive as well. His interactive style and creative presentation kept the students involved throughout. The distribution of freebies towards the end of the session did prove that Perfetti Van Melle was indeed innovative when it came to marketing!!!

Concluded.
