Management Interaction at IMI, India
48 Georgetown University Students visit India for joint session on "Business Policy and Strategic Management"

New Delhi, August 17, 2005: International Management Institute (IMI) played host to 48 executive students of Georgetown Business School accompanied by Prof. Stanley Nollen, Professor of Business Policy & Strategy with Prof. Reena Aggarwal, Professor of Finance, Georgetown School, at the Institute's Campus at Qutab Institutional Area, New Delhi, on a joint session on "Business Policy and Strategic Management".

In a unique management interaction, Executive Students from both the institutes discussed the "Concern and Issues for Executive Education in USA and India" through a panel discussion by students of both institutes. Later various aspects of the Indian case prepared by Harvard Business School on the award winning "ITC e-choupal" initiative in rural management.

Mr. Vijay Kidambi, Business Manger, ITC, IBD Division explained and responded to several queries by IMI and Georgetown students.

Welcoming the guests, Dr. C. S. Venkata Ratnam, Director, International Management Institute (IMI), said, "The e-choupal initiative to empower rural poor recently faced resistance from powerful vested interests in cultural India. But the pressure groups did not succeed as the farmers took out a procession defending the contribution made by ITC and how it has made a significant difference in their lives." He also mentioned that, "Though the Georgetown MBA faculty and students are visiting IMI for the fourth time (since 1999), this year's event is unique in two ways: First, the panelists are students. Second, both the groups are discussing an Indian case which has aroused global attention."

After the presentation by Mr. Kidambi, executive students from both the Institutes were divided in 8-9 teams (5 executives from Georgetown, USA and 3 from IMI). The joint sessions explored the source of value created by the e-choupal initiative, its critical weaknesses in the existing supply chain and the essential feature of the operation, the success factors, the future possibilities and how could the e-choupal model be adapted for new businesses in view of increasing technological sophistication for rural India among other issues. The above questions prepared by Prof. Vidhu Shekhar Jha, Associate Professor, Corporate Strategy and Operations Management of IMI, who also conducted the Joint Case-Study discussion, were then assigned to each team to present their views after working jointly on the issues and questions.

After the presentation Professor Nollen said, "This is a wonderful and learning experience for us and we hope to continue it in the future also." This sentiment was echoed by Dr. Deepak Chawla, Dean International Management Institute (IMI).

The session ended with informal buffet dinner with all students and faculty and a guided tour of the IMI's campus for the visiting students.

Concluded.
