BIM Trichy Students Win IMAGINE CUP - A Microsoft-sponsored Global Competition

About the Imagine Cup 2005

Imagine Cup is a Microsoft-sponsored global competition designed to show students the real-world opportunities that are available through technology. This is the third year in which the Imagine Cup competitions have been organized. The finals were held in the city of Yokohama in Japan between July 27th and August 2. The theme of the Imagine cup this year challenged students to "Imagine a world where technology dissolves the boundaries between us". There were several even categories like Algorithm, Technology Business Plan, Software Design, Web Development, etc.

The Technology Business Plan

In this category, students were asked to submit viable and smart business plans that used technology to dissolve the boundaries amongst people. Specificaly, the IT Business Plan challenged the students to present great ideas for bridging the digital divide in the form of a business plan. This category saw over 300 entries from over 90 countries worldwide.

The team 'ProGreen' from Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM), Trichy, India, won the First Prize of US$ 8000 in the Technology Business Plan category. The winning team members are Anand Venkataraman, Anitha Parthasarathy, Deepak Bhatter and Santhosh Ramdoss, all students from BIM, Trichy.

The Indian team's proposal is to grow a number of rural micro cooperatives and, drawing on that affordable labor source, provide outsourced data-entry and conversion services to large Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies. The ProGreen team from BIM will interact with the large BPOs and the rural workers in an enabling, or sub-contracting role.
