Human Equation 2005: SIMSR's Annual Inter-collegiate HR Event
Post-event Press Release

Inaugural Address: "Raising the Bar of Human Resources"

Human Equation 2005 was inaugurated at K. J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies (SIMSR) and Research by Mr. Pradeep Mansukhani, CEO Marico Industries Ltd. on August 20th, 2005. Mr. Mansukhani lighted the lamp, and delivered the keynote address on "Raising the Bar of Human Resources", the theme for this year's edition of SIMSR's Annual Inter-collegiate HR event.

Mr. Mansukhani commenced his address by posing a question, "We know what HR does, but what does HR deliver?" In other words, what is apparent is the various activities that HR performs. What is not so obvious is the value that the HR function delivers to the organization. "HR must be able to demonstrate the value it provides to the stakeholders," said Mr. Mansukhani. It must develop a unique and powerful perspective that shows the Input-Output equation, transforming the intangible benefits into tangible, quantifiable ones, much in the same manner as ROI does for Finance and Market share for marketing professionals.

To sum up, HR has to transform itself from being the Implementer of strategy to the being the Strategist itself. And it is here, in Mr. Mansukhani's opinion that the bar gets raised for HR.

Research Paper Competition

A Research Paper Competition for students with a unique take on what HR means in today's world yielded a keen contest between two teams from SCMHRD and one each from Dalmiya and IIT, Mumbai respectively. The contestants expressed their views on 'Quantifying HR' and delineated the approaches that they felt were most appropriate given the constraints and difficulties in measuring the value delivered by the HR department to a company's stakeholders that include employees, customers, investors and all other parties associated in some manner with the company.

Mr. Ronald Sequeira, VP HR, Tata Power, Mr. Pradeep Vaishnav, VP HR, Aventis, Mr. Anantadev Bhandopadhyay, Consultant and Mr. Paresh Gupta, Asst VP HR, Citifinancial separated the wheat from the chaff. The winning teams were: -

1st place: Mridula Sharma, Megha Chhabra and Anshu Mordia, SCMHRD
2nd place: Namita Jain, Neha Juwatkar and Priya Khare, N. L. Dalmiya
