XLRI Professor Wins Best Teacher Award

Jamshedpur, August 25, 2005: Dr. Ram Kumar Kakani, Faculty of Corporate Finance and Strategy at the XLRI School of Management, Jamshedpur will be conferred the "Best Young Teacher Award" by the Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS) on the 30th of August at its 17th AIMS Annual Convention to be held in Hyderabad. The award consists of a gold medal (sponsored by Blue Shift) and a felicitation.

He dedicated the award to his teachers without whose support, he said, he could not have come such a long way. Dr. Kakani also thanked the XLRI community by saying, "XLRI as an institute and its faculty are known for their commitment to carry out research and impart quality education. The environment and resources available at the institute facilitate an individual's penchant for research. I am grateful to my colleagues and students who have time and again facilitated my research and appreciated my teaching methodology. At times they have added to the experience by giving me valuable feedback."

At the young age of 34 years, Dr. Kakani has various laurels to his credit. His research interests, which are in the areas of Corporate Strategy, Business & Financial Analysis, Corporate Governance, and Business Families, have been recognized across the world. He was rewarded through 'Aage og Elva Nimbs' Scholarship at the Copenhagen Business School, Denmark. Aditya Birla Research Center of London Business School funded his work on "Diversification Strategy and Financial Performance Relationship of Business Groups". He has been associated with National Stock Exchange to do a sponsored work on "Corporate Performance Determinants of Indian Firms". He was also the recipient of the Best Paper Award at the 2002 International Business & Economic Research Conference. He is also on the Editorial Board of two research journals. His book on Accounting has been accepted as a text book in many Business Schools.

Currently, he is a board member of three organizations. He has been associated with consultancy projects both for the corporate sector and the government organizations including the Planning Commission of India.

Prior to joining academics, he has worked in the corporate sector. This industry experience and his research orientation have contributed significantly to his teachings in Finance and Strategic Management area. He has done his B.Tech. form the Andhra University in Vishakapatnam and has completed his Doctorate in Management from Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta.

Expressing his happiness over Dr. Kakani's award, Gaurik Shah, his student of Finance at XLRI, said, "I always found his teaching methodology and course design extremely relevant and unique. The rigor does instill in one a sense of responsibility and always helps a person seek knowledge. It is a method where throughout the course one gets a feeling of satisfaction that he is gaining a lot of learning out of it. It is indeed my privilege that I learnt corporate finance from him and I am sure I have a lot more to learn from him always in my career."
