International Management Research Conference, "Athenaeum", Held at BIM, Trichy

Athenaeum, the Third International Management Research Conference of Bharathidasan Institute of Management, was held on 14th & 15th February in Trichy. Athenaeum is derived from Greek word "Athenion", the temple of Goddess Athena, the

Goddess of Wisdom & Civilization, where scholars congregate to deliberate and nurture philosophy and thoughts.

Athenaeum at BIM is a confluence of academicians and practitioners who gather from all over the world to discuss and deliberate topics on Contemporary Management Research. Athenaeum is an initiative of the students which is ably supported by the faculty. The major sponsors of Athenaeum this year included the likes of BHEL, TNPL, Karur Vysya Bank, SBI, Cethar Vessels, St. John's Freight Systems, Sage, Cengage and GramaVidiyal.

Athenaeum '09 is the third edition of the international conference which has had a highly successful journey so far. This year, Athenaeum received papers from 11 different countries such as UK, France, Iran, Malaysia, and Bangladesh, and more with around 100 choice papers, in all management topics like Marketing - Retailing & Consumer Behavior, Finance - Global Financial Crisis and HR - Talent Management.

The inauguration was held on 14th February, 9:00 AM and presided over by distinguished scientist, Padmashri Dr. A. Sivathanu Pillai, Director, DRDO, CEO & MD, BrahMos Aerospace and Dr. M. Ponnavaikko, Honorable Vice Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, Prof. M. Sankaran, Director, BIM Trichy and The Conference Chairman, Dr. David Jawahar, Head, CECMAR (Centre for Contemporary Management Research), the body which organizes Athenaeum.

Dr. Sivathanu Pillai, in his keynote address, expressed that global leadership can come in India's way if we have competitive knowledge base and achieve product excellence. And this, he said, can only be achieved with innovative concepts and world-class leadership. He urged the students to have a vision for the future of India which aims to achieve 100% literacy, poverty eradication, high quality of life for all, and a sound value system. He lauded the effort and purpose behind events like Athenaeum, and asked the students to carry on the same attitude towards their future as well as India's.

In his address, the Vice Chancellor pointed out that India is one of the richest countries in terms of resources and what India needs is the right kind of people to manage them. He stressed upon the fact that management institutions should equip India's future managers with these skill sets. He also said that Total Quality Management is what India should try to achieve to maximize the effective utilization of its resources.

The research papers in the conference were presented during the two days in separate sessions chaired by distinguished academicians like Dr. M. J. Xavier, Distinguished Professor, Great Lakes Institute of Management, Director of the Kotler-Srinivasan Centre, Dr. Seethalakshmi, Director, Centre for Academic Excellence & Research, Anna University, Dr. Punniyamoorthy, Professor & HOD, NIT Trichy, Dr. Kaliyamoorthy, Professor & Director at Alagappa Institute of Management, Dr. K. K. Ramachandran, Director of School of International Business and the Vice Principal of GRD College, Dr. Godwin Prem Singh, Coordinator & Facilitator for administrating Indira Gandhi National Open University at Bishop Heber College and Dr. Selvam, Head of Commerce & Financial Studies Department, Bharathidasan University.
