IIM Calcutta Students Take a STEP in the Right Direction

As August draws to an end, 40 or so students in IIM Calcutta are packing their bags for a term of international experience in foreign B-schools. These include top-notch colleges like Institute De Empresa, CUNY (City University of New York), European Business School and WHU. The Student Exchange Program at IIM Calcutta, popularly known as STEP, extends this unique opportunity to its students every year on campus. With an intake capacity of around 100 students and a collaboration partnership with more than 25 B-schools around the world, IIM Calcutta's STEP program serves as an effective tool for students to understand the academic environs of international B-schools.

The STEP program at IIM Calcutta, which started as early as 2000, has been very successful because of the keen faculty interest. Last November, Prof. Anup Sinha, Dean, Program Initiatives at IIM Calcutta visited many prestigious business schools in the US and added many more B-schools to the list of partner universities. Some of them have also announced scholarships for students at IIM Calcutta. Prof. Sinha added, "IIM Calcutta is working on a series of innovative strategies to attract more and more US B-schools to the STEP program." He adds, "IIM-C enjoys a very good reputation amongst the affiliate universities primarily due to the high quality of students. Ankit Kedia who was awarded the Best Student Award at EBS, Germany in 2004 is one such example".

In today's highly global business environment, such programs are very helpful in enabling students gain exposure to different cultures, people, business philosophies, education systems and in gaining a global perspective. "I think STEP is a very good way to learn and unlearn. Living in a different setting with people from all over the world would sure be a great experience for me," says Varun Sharma who is going to K.U. Leuven (KUL), the oldest catholic university in the world. Anshuman Sengar, who is going to CBS (Denmark) echoes a similar sentiment, "In today's dynamic business environment where the boundaries between countries in terms of business, economies and preferences are diminishing fast and business is moving towards a seamless integration, the knowledge and experience about cross-cultural business practices, work ethics and culture is the cutting edge competence and skill set."
