SPJIMR Mumbai's PGDM (Batch 2009-11) Saw Increased Participation from Girls - Inducts 42% Girl Students

S. P. Jain Institute of Management & Research welcomed 180 participants to its PGDM batch of 2009-2011, which includes 75 girls. Selections were made from over 18000 applications through rigorous admission process, which included weight-age being given to the past academic background, versatility and overall student personality. The new batch has 144 participants with prior work-experience and about 155 with an engineering background.

SPJIMR has carved its place among the top ten business schools in India by successfully integrating the eastern ethos with western efficiency and developing well grounded, sensitive and intellectual business leaders through its mission of 'influencing practices' and 'promoting value based growth'. SPJIMR's PGDM programme has been accredited by AMBA, UK giving it international credibility and status.

The Orientation program started with a short prayer from Upanishad - A classic mantra of togetherness - Saha Navavatu. It is a mantra chanted by the teacher and the student, in the beginning and the end of every study and signifying mutual growth through knowledge sharing. Dr. Sesha Iyer, Director SPJIMR welcomed the new participants and spoke to them about SPJIMR, its history, culture, traditions and spirit of innovation and excellence. Dr. Atish Chattopadhyay, the PGDM Co-ordinator introduced the programme requirements and pedagogy. SPJIMR is known for its innovation in pedagogy and has incorporated unique initiatives like ADMAP i.e. "Learning by Doing", DOCC, sensitivizing participants to social needs and Abhudaya, which involves mentoring the children from poor economic backgrounds as a part of its curriculum. Prof. A. B. Kulkarni, reiterated the expectations from students and clarified the concepts of "Shravan" (intensive listening & presence), "Manan" (reflection and internalizing of learning) and "Dhyan" (contemplation and meditation).

The day ended with an interesting and exhilarating question answer round with Dr. M. L. Shrikant, Hon. Dean SPJIMR. Dr. Shrikant said that "MBA education does not teach participants to find big jobs and earn great money but facilitates their understanding of various management concepts and practices and its relatedness to real-life situations." According to him "MBA education should not build arrogant managers but individuals with humility and receptiveness to new learning and SPJIMR would help participants explore their real self and their ability to serve the society at large".

AMBA Accreditation for SPJIMR Programmes

SPJIMR's eleven months PGPM programme is the first full-time post graduate programme in India to have received the MBA accreditation by AMBA. Other programmes of SPJIMR that have received AMBA accreditation include PGDM and EMP. The Association of MBAs,(AMBA) London, UK is an international impartial accrediting authority on postgraduate business education and represents the highest standard of achievement earned by the best programmes in the world after a rigorous assessment process. With AMBA accreditation, SPJIMR joins the family of 158 programmes in 72 countries and has earned international credibility and status. The award would serve as a benchmark for students, employers and academicians to make informed decision in the present complex and crowded MBA market.

Prof. Prem Chandrani who spearheaded the accreditation process for SPJIMR remarked that "AMBA accreditation has brought global recognition for SPJIMR programmes and reinforces its philosophy towards innovation in postgraduate management education.

On receiving AMBA accreditation, Dr. M. L. Shrikant, Hon. Dean, SPJIMR remarked "AMBA accreditation is an acknowledgement of our commitment to academic excellence and is a stepping stone towards our global journey."

Concluded.
