VGSOM, IIT Kharagpur Celebrates the "Joy of Giving" on the Auspicious Day of Gandhi Jayanti

Shraddha - the socially responsible arm of VGSOM celebrated the "Joy of giving" on the auspicious day of Gandhi Jayanti. The event was a part of Joyfest organised by the JAM magazine, it is spread over a week and covered around 300 colleges in India.

VGSOM, IIT Kharagpur had taken a responsibility to spread the joy in Kharagpur, being a part of this initiative which was spread in over 15 cities. The event started with a three and a half km bicycle ride to reach a remote village of Saluva where the event was planned. Although the initial response was weak, as time passed we had around 100 kids clamouring for taking part in the activities arranged. Various activities organized by the team on this occasion were general interaction, chocolate distribution, and dance party, sharing general awareness among children and then arranging for meals at the end. Though the event was of short duration and lasted for only 3 hours, the best part was that the team was able to engage the children, which was a challenge in itself.

The audience included not only children but teachers of the school as well. Discussions were also on with GOPALI - an NGO very active in this region to come to some fruitful conclusion so as to change the life of these little change agents, who will eventually shape the future of India. The enthusiasm of the children was beyond description, they shared their aspirations to be pilots and doctors while a few dreamed of being the next SRK! But their optimism was palpable. We saw Sachin Tendulkar distribute food among the less privileged and Shobhaa De talk about it in TOI but the "Joy of Giving" week could really be celebrated in its true spirit by just giving.

Over all it was a great feeling to arrange such an event considering the limited resources and time constraints of the team. At the end, it seems Life @ VGSOM would have been incomplete without an activity like this. Being a future leader, the responsibility doesn't ends at leading the nation but to produce and nurture the people who can lead it after us. This is just the beginning.

Concluded.
