VGSOM, IIT Kharagpur Organizes Leadership Week

Aligned to the mission of creating Future CEOs, VGSoM organized Leadership Week wherein the idea was to develop the sense of leadership in each and every student of the school through corporate interaction with MDs and CEOs in form of guest lectures, formal sessions and role plays and informal group discussions among students.

The event kicked off on 2nd September 09 with Mr. Harsh K. Jha, MD, Tata Metaliks Ltd. and the Chairman of Tata Metaliks Kubota Pipes Ltd. visiting the campus and interacting with students on various issues that a leader faces. His lecture was rather an eye opener for all the budding managers on what lies ahead as they plan to join the big MNCs. He started off by giving an overview of the changes that the business environment has seen recently and then progressed towards discussing the effects of those changes of the overall business as a whole. He emphasised that today, a Manager is not just responsible for taking decisions taking into consideration his own Business Unit. He needs to also account for Climate change, CSR initiatives, Innovation thus widening the spectrum of his responsibilities.

\ This wonderful beginning translated into huge participation of students in the various events organized during the week. Events like Role Plays and Leadership case solver saw participation from almost the entire batch. Press Conference and Quarter Results remained the two most exciting events as far as the fun part was concerned. Informal group discussions on various topics pertaining to the current business and economic scenario, evolved as the event where most of the learning happened.

Such a successful event required a successful closing and to do so, of the most dynamic entrepreneurs of our country was invited to interact with students. Mr. Biswadip Gupta, the recipient of the very prestigious "Young Entrepreneurship Award, 2000" and who is currently the MD & CEO, Jindal South West (JSW) Steel visited the campus. He took the audience for a walk through the thought process involved in setting up the new steel manufacturing plants with live examples from two of his own ventures in Jharkhand and West Bengal (Shalboni) with a motive of enlightening the students with the barriers to face by the MBA graduates when they enter the Corporate World. The very first thing that he stressed on was that the start of every economic activity is manufacturing, especially steel, owing to the huge employment opportunity it provides. He emphasised that every beginning is followed by a lot of economic and political roadblocks but as a manager we need to find the solution to each one of them. He also talked on one of the most striking features of mega projects, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which should promise privileges to the villagers and the stakeholders who would be affected by the acquisition of land and setup of plant. He went on saying that the management should also take the responsibility of honing and employing the people losing out their lands.

The week came to an end with a promise of organizing similar events in future.
