Capt. Ram Mohan, Advisor, TVS Motors Addresses Students at VGSOM, IIT Kharagpur

Capt. Ram Mohan, Advisor, TVS Motors, addressed the MBA students at VGSOM, IIT Kharagpur as a part of the 'Industry Connect' initiative organized by the 'Corporate and Media Interaction' Team of Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur.

Capt. Mohan Ram, an ex-naval officer and a Business Maverick - the man behind the historic turnaround of TVS Motor Company and an ex- IIT-Kgpian of the batch of 1953--spoke at length and with infective passion about 'New Product Development' taking the TVS Scooty Pep as an example.

He walked the audience through the various steps involved in the project covering Product Concept, Product Design and Development followed by Process Proving and finally the Product launch stage. He talked about the need to accurately convert a Customer's requirements, needs and preferences to a set of engineering specs being one of the most important parts in the Survey and Concept Stage and also about the importance of targeting a Customer Base and shaping the product according to their aspirations and lifestyle.

The Motor Industry is a 'Passion Driven' Industry run by highly motivated and inspired people was one of his well appreciated quotes. The concepts of Target Quality Table and Disfeaturing were lucidly explained by him. The 'must be qualities' and 'attractive qualities' were two of the interesting points which he shared with the students. He also spoke about how adding little things like 'cup holders' in cars can change the whole experience of a buyer and it forces other competitors to follow suit. Such insights by a man with decades of industry experience accompanied by a real life case study were really fascinating and easy to connect to.

Capt. Ram Mohan concluded the lecture by talking about the need for companies to move from product oriented to a customer oriented approach. The session ended with Q&A where Capt. Ram Mohan addressed a variety of questions and left the students clearly wishing for much more of the same.

Concluded.
