XIM, Bhubaneswar Organizes a CEO Talk & Naming Ceremony of its New Academic Block

Mr. H. M. Nerurkar, Executive Director (India and South East Asia), Tata Steel Limited Addressing XIMB Students

On the 11th of July, 2009, the Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB) had the naming ceremony of its new campus facility and a CEO talk. The Chief Guest for the evening was Mr. H. M. Nerurkar - Executive Director (India and South East Asia), Tata Steel Limited. Accompanying him on the dais were Mr. Rajive Kaul - Chairman, XIMB and Fr. P. T. Joseph, S. J., Director, XIMB and Prof W. S. Williams.

The event began with Mr. Rajive Kaul introducing Mr. Nerurkar as a global personality and a great leader. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Nerurkar took to the dais. Mr. Nerurkar reiterated the TATAs contribution to the development of education in India. He remembered JN Tata and the visions he had for the education system in India. He said J. N. Tata believed for India to grow it needed to invest in basic industries like education, science and technology. Mr. Nerurkar further went on to talk of the present times. He believed that India would be a little insulated from the global downturn because of its low import dependency and strong forex reserves. However India will not be able to completely escape the downturn. Export dependant sectors will be hit. However the situation does offer opportunities too if handled maturely. He cited the example of Tata Steel. Tata Steel in October was at an all time high. It had just received the prestigious Deming quality award and was the only plant outside Japan to get one. Come November the situation took a U- turn. Customers dried up and Tata Steel shares began making new lows every day. However Tata Steel went for a complete revamp of its plans. It used the FMCG model to sell steel. Also due to presence of robust ERP system Tata Steel had access to large pool of data. It analysed the data to change its product mix and customer mix and become competitive yet again.
