BIM's "Crescita 2005 - Kartavya" Held at Bangalore
First Day Report - November 5, 2005

Crescita 2005, the annual confluence of business minds organized by the students of BIM, Trichy in Bangalore was a great success by any standard. ‘Kartavya’ as this year’s event was known, had 'Corporate Social Responsibility' as its theme. Various eminent personalities including corporate, legal experts, government servants and social workers participated in the two-day affair held on the 5th and 6th of November at The Capitol in Bangalore.

Though scheduled to start at 10.30 am, the function started only at 11.00 am due to certain circumstances beyond the control of the event organizers. The venue for this year’s function, The Capitol, was majestic with baroque grandeur. The eminent personalities on the dais for the inaugural function were Dr. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Mr. D. Thangaraj, IAS, Dr. Jayasankaran and Prof. Sankaran.

The inauguration of the two-day conference was presided over by Dr. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw. In her inaugural address, the MD of Biocon praised the students of BIM for having chosen such a socially-conscious theme for their annual event. She was delighted by the prizes won by BIMites in various international and national events with socially relevant themes. Dr. Shaw highlighted the uphill task faced by Biocon in its efforts to lighten the burden of the underprivileged. She laid emphasis on the hardships faced in educating the poor about the insurance schemes and also lightly touched upon the role of politicians in confusing the already bewildered illiterates.

Dr. Shaw highlighted the fact that Biocon was also playing an active role in alleviating the plight of the needy through its ArokyaRaksha scheme. This one of a kind programme brings together healthcare and medicare encouraging public-private partnership in running Primary Health Centres. She revealed that plans are underway to take over Primary Health Centres of various states on the requests of the respective state governments implying that private participation would definitely improve the state of affairs. Dr. Shaw, in her concluding remarks, saluted Bharathidasan Institute of Management for its ‘very deep social conscience’ and its manifestation in Kartavya’s theme. She ended her address with an appeal to the audience, particularly the BIMites gathered there, to ‘transform the social fibre of India’.
