Samavesh 2005 Held at K J Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research

At Samavesh 2005, held on 2nd and 3rd of December, the annual management event of K. J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research, the confluence of elements was there for everyone to see. The two-day seminar had the biggest names in business sharing their view-point on their respective fields.

Day 1: 2nd December 2005

Inauguration

The event began with lighting of the lamp ceremony by Mr. Subhash Chandra, Chairman, Zee Telefilms. In his inaugural speech, Mr. Subhash Chandra spoke about how entrepreneurship is a Samavesh of vision and its implementation. Mr. Subhash Chandra spoke at length about the hurdles he faced in the process of establishing the Zee Empire and how he overcame them. Commenting on the state of Indian education, he said that the present system of education imposed by the British was inadequate for development of the present generation. Modern management techniques are important in this complex global world but equally important are the centuries' long tradition and culture.

First Session

First in line was the Marketing session with "Advertising v/s. Sales promotion" as its theme. Mr. Atul Tandon, Director, MICA, spoke about how we need to look at advertising and sales promotion rather than advertising v/s sales promotion. He commented on the dangers of over promotion by citing the example that people remember the Lalitaji ad of Surf but not the Tuff shoes featuring Madhu Sapre and Milind Soman.

Shazia Khan, VP, JWT, gave various tips to students regarding the requisites for being successful in the field of advertising. In her presentation, interlaced with a lot of movie and advertisement clippings, she emphasized on how the entire advertisement / sales promotion concept comprises of 2 words - Stiumulus and Response.
