Intaglio 2005-06 takes-off with the Inaugural Ceremony at IIM Calcutta
Day 1 Report

Intaglio, the flagship event of IIMC, took off today with the Inaugural Ceremony. The Chief Guests for the event were Mr. Ravi Dhariwal, Executive director, The Times Group and Mr. Chandrasekaran, CEO & Head Global Operations, Tata Consultancy Services.

The Director of IIMC, Shekhar Chaudhuri and the Chairperson, Placement Office, IIMC, Prof. Ranjan Das also shared the stage.

The theme of Intaglio this year is "Motifs for Sustained Growth". The relevance and importance of the theme has been summarized by Prof. Amitava Bose (Faculty at IIMC) in the following words: -

"Contemporary growth is largely driven by a consumption binge, stimulated by increased opportunities and easy loans. To raise the GDP growth rate, saving and investment must grow faster than GDP. Contemporary growth experience is soiled by slow growth of organised sector employment. In fact, there has been an increase in unemployment during the 1990's. This has had predictable political consequences, most notably a change of the ruling party coalition. Employment in organised manufacturing has to grow for growth is to be sustainable. In the longer run, growth is going to be determined by how fast we can educate our massive work force. A more educated work force will enhance labour productivity, thereby increasing both the employability of the work force and the levels of output."

The distinguished speakers enlightened the audience on various aspects of this theme.

Mr. Dhariwal focussed on the importance of contribution of individual ambitions and efforts and tried to relate how individual efforts can be blended with organizational goals. He laid stress on the practicality of achieving sustained growth. According to Mr. Chandrasekaran growth should be sustainable, profitable and efficient. The environment and the industry may pose threats to long term growth but it is up to people to find out opportunities amidst that and then only can they achieve success.
