'Silence! The Court is in Session' to be Performed by Students at SPJIMR, Mumbai
December 28, 2005

The only art that MBAs are usually credited with having an interest in is the art of making money. Walk in to the SPJIMR auditorium on the 28th of December, 2005, and have this myth shattered.

On the 28th of December, the Guild of Actors at SP (GASP) is presenting - "Silence! The Court is in Session" - a play by one of India's eminent playwrights, Mr. Vijay Tendulkar.

"Silence! The Court is in Session" beautifully traces how societal norms choke individual freedom. The play revolves around a set of performers who come down to a village to screen a play on President Johnson's atomic expansion. As a method of killing time, they decide to stage a mock court-session to educate a villager who is to take on a bit role in the play for the first time. Seizing the mock court as an excuse, the actors slyly trap a lead lady character as an accused in the trial. Under the garb of doing the play, they then proceed to probe into her past and cast their judgment on her conduct. The play explores a world where the only virtue recognized is conformance. While not in a position to ensure conformance of members, society reacts strongly by punishing deviance when given the power, if even in jest.

The Guild of Actors at SP was formed in 2003 as a means of delving into the rich field of theatre. Co-ordinated by the faculty under the ADMAP program, GASP is run entirely by students who stage the entire production. The baton passes on to interested volunteers in the next batches to keep the tradition alive.

Girish Karnad's "Tughlaq" by GASP was the first play staged in 2003, followed by Mahesh Dattani's "The Final Solution" in 2004.
