Mridang at IIM, Indore Celebrates the Rich Indian Culture

The maiden cultural festival of IIM Indore looks to more than live up to its promise, as Mridang took its first steps today.

The hype created around the much awaited festival, was justified as IIM Indore looked like a mini India, with people from different parts of the country celebrating the rich Indian culture, through recitals, plays and literary activities.

The festival inaugurated by the director of IIM Indore, Prof. N. Ravichandran, the festival coordinator, Prof. S. K. Ghosh, and the special guest, Mr. Piyush Mishra, famous theatre and film personality. The lighting the lamp ceremony was followed by a mesmerizing music recital by a group from the ITC music academy, Kolkata. Audiences were sent into raptures with the soul-stirring aalaaps and the effortless harkats, as the group gave a scintillating performance in front of the crowd.

Pratidhwani, the theatre competition, staged four of the best play entries out of a total of 8 entries which were registered. Theatre groups included Purple Aura from the Proton Business School, Nepathya Natya Samooh, and teams from Abhinaya Academy and Madhya Pradesh Lok Kala Academy. The audiences were stunned by the life-like performances of the actors, as they brought the stage alive with their histrionics. The themes ranged from societal to mythological.

The theatre event was followed by a workshop on creative writing by Mr. Piyush Mishra. For the uninitiated, Piyush Mishra is a renowned actor, lyricist and music director, seen in films like Deewar (2004) and Gulaal, for which he has also written the lyrics and given music. He gave an insightful talk on the various facets and nuances of writing. For the participants, this was a rare opportunity to interact with an eminent personality, and they relished this chance given to them and had something to take away from the talk.

Other events of the day included a guest talk by the Mr. Arvind Kalia from the newspaper, Patrika. In his presentation he spoke about the youth and the emerging youth culture in the country. He defined what one meant by youth, and went on to highlight the effects of culture on marketing of various brands. He later effectively brought out the various dilemmas and opinions the youth today form, which challenge the status quo and go against prevailing social norms.

Mridang played host to the team of Gulaal, where Mr. Piyush Mishra was joined by his support cast in the film, Mr. Raj Singh Chaudhry and Ms. Jesse Randhawa. Participants got the rare opportunity to enjoy one of the finest films in Indian cinema, along with its cast.

To sum up, the beat of Mridang has started to echo, and is bound to reverberate across India in the days to come.

Concluded.
