IIMs to Review Contract with Prometric

The Indian Institutes of management, after encountering enough criticism for catastrophic CAT 2009, have decided upon to review the 5 year contract with American firm Prometric, which was accountable to conduct the computer adaptable common admission test 2009 successfully.

The IIMs contracted American concern Prometric to conduct the test for a exorbitant fee of $40 million in partnership of NIIT, and aimed at smooth computerized CAT 2009 to enhance the quality of test but ironically all the efforts were snagged due to technical glitches. Almost 20,000 of 2.42 lakhs students experienced various types of hurdles while attempting the test. Approximately one-sixth of the 304 i.e. 50 test labs failed to conduct the exam as per schedule and test had to be rescheduled for nearly 9000 candidates. Besides attempters, even a section of faculty in IIMs was not happy with online test and coerced authorities to drop the test altogether.

The IIMs and Prometric initially issued a very unconvincing answer 'virus attack' for such major failure. However due to mounting pressure, IIMs admitted the errors and announced to review the wrong-doings of the first online edition of the test. As per media sources, in an answer to the question, whether IIMs would continue with Prometric to conduct CAT 2010, IIM-A Director Mr. Samir K. Barua said "We will certainly review the contract. It may not mean we would scrap it but we will definitely review to see what went wrong,"

However, Prometric took responsibility for technical glitches which marred the exam and agreed that amendments were required from the application process to the actual test taking stage. Prometric also assured that the results for CAT 2009 were not affected or modified by any sort of technical issues.

Concluded.
