Henkel India Ltd. Announces Enviro Care Award 2009

Henkel India Ltd. announced the winners of its much coveted contest, the `Henkel Eco-petition', a national level paper presentation for school children on serious environmental issues. The topic for this year was 'Proper Channelisation of Water Resources'.

The competition saw widespread participation from school children pan India, voicing their concerns & solution on conserving our precious blue gold - "Water". The second place was bagged by Shivam Tiwari from Kalka Public School Delhi. Each of these winners was chosen by a panel of expert environmentalists. The Henkel Enviro Care award carries a cash prize of Rs. 7,500/- for the second place.

Each entry was carefully judged on novelty of the idea, the thought process behind the idea and also on the practicality of the idea being implemented. Water becoming a scare commodity, the entries saw a passion, vigor and responsibility from the students to do their bit and conserve water effectively and efficiently. The judges had a tough task of bringing the entries down to the final twenty five numbers. The essays were further vetted and the top four winners were selected.

According to Mr. Jayant Singh, Managing Director, Henkel India Limited, "Water is a scarce resource worldwide. Conserving this precious resource needs to be a key priority for everyone and that is why Henkel India chose this as the topic for the paper presentation. There has been an over-whelming response to Henkel's eco-petition this year and it is indeed encouraging and heartening to see young minds of today think and be concerned about our environment.

The entries saw some interesting viewpoints with the students reiterating the need to urgent action by the community as a whole towards preserving this fast depleting natural resource.

"Our objective with Henkel eco-petition is to heighten awareness about this central issue in the minds of our young population. Henkel in India is committed towards achieving sustainable development." added Mr. Jayant Singh, Managing Director, Henkel India Limited.

In its detergents Henkel uses zeolites which makes possible the formulation of high-performance, low-cost, environmentally friendly detergents that are phosphate-free. In Karaikal, Henkel produces dishwashing detergents, glass cleaners and laundry detergents. Wastewater from production processes is treated using a new filtration system.

Instead of simply discharging it, the reclaimed water is fed back into the production process. The wastewater from sanitation facilities is also treated and re-used. A specially developed treatment plant reduces the organic load in this wastewater, so that it can be used for cooling towers and to water the greenery, thus eliminating the need to use precious well water for this purpose. These treatment systems save at least eight percent water every year.
