The Social Service Group (SSG) of Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode organized a two day Management Development Program for NGOs and Social Entrepreneurs.

This program is aimed at introducing the latest management practices to social entrepreneurs and NGOs for capacity building and streamlining their operations.

The Social Service Group (SSG), a student driven body works on various social initiatives in the health and education sector. "With our close interaction with various NGOs for more than a decade, we have realized that there is a need to introduce the concepts of modern management to the people who are associated with managing various NGOs across our country. In order to enhance their performance, we have come up with a Management Development Program for NGOs especially in the development sector" claimed a member of SSG.

The objective of the training program was to initiate and impart high quality training for NGOs and social entrepreneurs to enhance their managerial capabilities to meet the requirements of the sponsoring organization as well as benefit the society in an efficient manner.

A variety of topics in various areas such as Finance & Accounting, Human Resource Management, Operations and Logistics, Information Systems and Marketing were covered in the program. The program was handled by the esteemed faculty from IIMK including Dr. Debashis Chatterjee (Director, IIMK), Prof. K. K. Ramesh, Dr. Anandakuttan B. Unnithan , Dr. K. Unnikrishnan Nair, Dr. Rupesh Pati, Dr. T. N. Krishnan and a few guest lecturers from the industry.

A two day residential program conducted at the IIM Kozhikode campus, the MDP was a huge success. It saw participation from about 40 NGOs working in South India. The participants included social entrepreneurs as well people from the top management of various NGOs including Directors, Secretaries and Program Managers. The participants hailed from diverse backgrounds and had a rich experience of working in the social sector, with several having close to 10 years of field experience. They were able to articulate the issues faced by them and obtain valuable inputs from the faculty.

The NGOs were extremely happy with this first-time initiative by IIM Kozhikode which gave them the opportunity to interact with the best faculty and obtain significant management inputs. They expressed deep satisfaction with the program. Based on their feedback and suggestions the Social Service Group intends to scale up the event in the upcoming years with programs tailor-made for specific sectors in the social development front. It was an enriching experience overall for both the participants and the organizers enabling us to see eye-to-eye on their needs and identify further avenues of co-operation between the institute and NGOs.
