Of Mediocrity, Noise and Also Some News a.k.a. India's Media Industry

In fact the noise has become so evident in Indian media industry that today newspapers are marketed for colors and extra supplements. Nobody talks of sharp-edge journalism or coverage. Everything is just driven by marketing, and sheer marketing.

However, to think that such a naïve reporting is limited only to these newspapers, is as naïve as it looks. Sudden spurts in news channels & 24x7 news programming has led reporters to search for news in every nook and corner, and suddenly, every thing is a news, and it seems the whole of India is going to be on TV in one form or another in next two years. And whether it is live 10-hours coverage of a naïve village astrologer Chunni Lal by Star News, or live adalat by Zee News of Gudiya, or breaking false news about CAT results leakage by a reporter in Headlines Today, all is same pure noise with its nose on TRP.

In older, simpler times this kind of reportage was packaged in the form of cheap magazines, named as Satya Katha or Manohar Kahaniya and was sold on seedy bus stands or railways stands, was restricted to the journey only, and was never allowed entry into a house, But today, come 10 pm and all channels are full of crime-related program ruling the airwave, where the whole attention is to put on sensation, and judgments are passed about crimes, and judgements are formed even before trials. (One such trial by Star News led to suicide by a driver in Delhi, but that gave more TRP, so...)

Breaking news at TV channels has become another mockery where all news is breaking news whether ita about Ganguly talking to Chappel, or a village small-fry predicting his death, or a classified advertising, it all comes in breaking news.
