Skipping Highly

Walk gently, grandmother told me,
Girls have to be graceful;
I jumped all my life over hurdles, Grandmom.
Grace would have seen me entangled in the
Briars of reality.

Speak softly, grandmother told me,
Girls have to be sweet in speech.
I yelled at life, all my youth, Grandmom.
Sweet would have seen me embroiled in the
Baker's bottles.

Aspire for calmness, grandmother told me,
Girls have to keep a lovely home.
I agitated my way through obscurity, Grandmom.
Calm would have seen me spiced away in the
Kitchen cabinet.

And so, today I skip as high as I can, Grandmom.
