Introduction

Brand management is an exciting career option. You might remember the actual job profile as laid down by none else than Porter. Well the actual job you may end up doing might be at divergence with your copybook views but it’s a fun place to be in.
The key parameters the recruiters focus on are: leadership & communication skills, good analytical ability, problem-solving skills, teamwork, short learning curve and creativity. There is no pre-requirement like an engineering degree but a candidate should be strong on above parameters.

So if you are kind of person who likes meeting people, who consider consulting boring and doesn’t want the grind of I-banking, then brand management is just what the doctor would recommend. And if you want to get into your own venture later on, it’s a sure seasoning to add to above reasons.

The perfect place to learn to run a business is as a brand manager. You learn to manage the dogs, cats, stars and question marks. No we don’t mean that you end up being a vet, with due respect to vets. Broadly speaking, you learn a lot about brand/product encompassing all the aspects ranging from strategy conceptualisation to implementation, monitoring sales and other aspects, with pitching thrown in for a good measure for more funds. It also helps you to hone up the leadership skills by leading all the people from diverse functions in alignment with your strategy bringing out the best in them. In short, where else would you handle a business worth Rs. 10-20 crores with no risk and all the associated learnings thrown in?

It is not really hard core entrepreneurship, in case you are looking at that. A brand manager adds value to existing businesses, then moves on to the next assignment.

The bottom line is that Brand management is a great career that provides you a terrific opportunity to learn how to market products and run businesses. It's an exciting, fast-paced career that teaches you the management of a new product launch to managing a mature brand. It helps you to hone the leadership skills besides using your skills and creativity to manage the product and the people from the diverse functional areas.
