N' Sour - The Cons

Be ready for a Bumpy Ride

Remember 1997. For the first time in the history of India, people were being fired over lunch while their office desks were being cleared behind their backs. Professionals from capital markets turned to jobs as diverse as advertising, PR and theatre.
This prompted one of the local brokerages to put ‘job security’ as the theme for one of its recruitment ads. The jobs in mutual funds and brokerages are one of the most volatile and swing with the markets. Good times are on a roll now with the BSE index testing the 6000 mark, but it's only a matter of time before the market dips downward, perhaps sharply, and investors run for cover. All this could translate into severe job cuts, cramped mobility, and slower advancement for all but the very best.

When do you take a Break?

After a period of time you won't be able to distinguish when you're working and when you're not. When you are home after watching BSE sensex gyrate 300 points up and 250 points down, you would be tuned to CNBC to find out the latest Infy price on NASDAQ (the premier technology exchange based in USA for the uninitiated). That's not to say you won't be able to get away to the Goa from time to time, but your mind will always be on stocks and the stock market. You will be completely addicted to finding the next bit of news and data on the stock you added to your portfolio recently. Your brain will take over your apartment.

Is this a Sales Call?

If you happen to be part of the sales team at brokerage houses, prepare to be hated, hung up on, abused, and ignored. Cold calling is the most ego-battering, exhausting form of misery ever devised. But calling people regularly who give you business and thus bonuses (read fund managers) is part of the ritual everyday, if you plan to sell and sell well. You will soon forget this when you get a glimpse of your year-end bonus. Good sales people are the most wanted and highest paid professionals in the business
