Ronny Screwvala exhorts entrepreneurs at TiEcon Delhi 2011
Eminent media entrepreneur Ronny Screwvala exhorted entrepreneurs to ‘invest in spreading the word about their idea and how well it was being executed’, at India’s biggest entrepreneurial conference -- TiEcon Delhi 2011-- in the capital.
The media moghul’s words of advice that perception management is vital to the growth of a start up were summed up in “Build a bigger aura, not a false aura’.
Dwelling on one of the key challenges for start ups – attracting brightest and retaining talent -- Screwvala’s advice to entrepreneurs was, “Hire people who are better than you. Hire people to grow and manage the company. Reward them by sharing the ownership.”
Screwvala, ranked among the 25 most powerful businesspeople in Asia by CNN, exhorted the entrepreneurs to evolve their businesses continuously in keeping with the market needs sharing UTV’s own example of moving from a B2B space to a B2C space in the last 5-7 years.
The entrepreneurial event celebrated the spirit of entrepreneurship among young and aspiring by focusing on Young achievers. Seventeen year old Deeya Bajaj from Delhi’s Shriram School was feted for being the youngest member of the Trans Greenland Skiing Expedition braving sub-zero temperatures and harsh, icy winds. IIM Bangalore Professor Anu Vaidyananthan, a Triathletics champion for treading new lengths in the world ironman length races and 33-year old Pune-ite Sucheta Kadethankar becoming the first Indian woman to cross the 1623 km Gobi desert.
For all three it was a story of single minded focus on their goals, determination and endurance. Triathlon, that includes swimming, cycling and running in a single stretch, is not a common sport in India at all and long distance triathlon is almost unheard of.
