Online MBA gaining momentum in India

Online MBA programmes are gaining momentum in India with many companies asking their executives to take up these courses. These programmes are increasing in demand given the flexibility in timings and executives from diverse backgrounds can join.
Other benefits of online MBA are that one can pursue these courses from any institute on the globe who offers such programmes. Students are given a time-slot when they can login into the system and can interact with one another and with professors through web cams. Students have to come online for about 20-30 hours for lessons every week.
There are not many b-schools offering online MBA courses in India as of now, but with the increasing popularity of such programmes more b-schools are planning to start these courses.
Some of the programmes available are Karnataka State Open University, Don Bosco University, AVAGMAH, Bharathiar University, UBS Open Education System, Sampuran Prakash School of Executive Education, Global Institute for Corporate Education, UBI, Indian Institute of Commerce and Trade (IICT), Lucknow, National Institute of Business Management and IGNOU Online MBA.
Other eminent b-schools who are venturing into online management courses are IIM-Calcutta, Glion Institute of Higher Education, Switzerland; U21 Global and UNC Kenan Flagler Business School.
Glion Institute of Higher Education, Switzerland has partnered with the Taj Hotels to impart online MBA in hospitality management for 25 middle and senior level managers at the eminent hospitality group. The programme costing Rs 19 lakh will be fully sponsored by Taj.
Companies prefer online MBA programmes due to flexibility in time so that their executives can work while pursuing MBA.
The total number of students at Glion has increased from 178 in 2011 to 300 this year. the schools plans to expand in business-to-business sector.
The Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) also offers satellite-based, long duration certificate programmes through the Hughes and NIIT Imperia platforms. Earnings through this programme counts to 20% of total revenue of IIM Calcutta.
IIM Cs online MBA programmes range from 6 months to one year duration.
These courses being recognized and reaching standards of classroom MBA, many institutes are starting these courses.
