View Full Version : MBA specialization in IT or Finance?????
vijay.dubey 02-12-2009, 05:50 PM Hi,
I am working as Tech lead in a software development firm. I am having 9 years of work experience mostly on microsoft technologies.
Now i am pursuing MBA 2nd sem. from SMU (Sikkim manipal university). Now i have to decide the area of specialization in my 3rd sem. I have options of Marketing, HR, Finance or IT.
I am not intrested in Marketing and HR. Now i am confused for specialization in finance or IT? Finance is my intrest and IT is my working domain.
I am confused with MBA IT scope, what kind of job i will get, will that really help me in my career or not?
If i go for MBA Finance then i think i will have knowledge of finance domain and my experience in IT, combination of both.
I am confused about will i get a good break after MBA finance, after working in software development for 9+ years?
I am unable to decide which one to choose as my specialization area. Please throw all your suggestions so that i can decide.
Please help me.................
thanks in advance.
Vijay
vijay.dubey 02-16-2009, 05:09 PM Hi Satish,
thanks for your advise. I am still confused about getting job after completing my mba finance.
Do you think, i can get good break after specializing in Finance because i don't have working experience in Finance domain?
I am also confused because i am planning to pick an absolutely new area (Finance) for specialization. the other safe option i found as specialization in Information System.this matches with my working domain but dont know what i will become after MBA IS.
Still Finance or IS???????
What do you think?
Thanks for your kind concern towards me.
sunrisesrs 02-27-2009, 09:07 PM finance is best option
Pepper 03-03-2009, 10:08 PM Hi
I feel go for Finance majors as you already have sufficient experience in IT. If you go with IT specialization the big question is : What is the worth of your 9 years of experience in IT.
Just consider this an SCM guy joins MBA course and does a major in SCM. If I am a recruiter I will give no weightage to specialisation as I expect an SCM guy with 9 years of IT experience to be thorough in this area. However if he has done a major in finance then I would see it as an added skill.
Always ask this question : What additional benefit do I get?
vijay.dubey 03-04-2009, 01:29 PM Hi Pepper,
Thanks a lot for your advise. Now i have decided to go for Finance specialization only.
Thanks

sharankumar.r 03-05-2009, 12:17 AM Hi,
I think the better option for you would be to do finance. And you can take job either in finance in system or corporate finance.
aman007 04-12-2009, 03:55 PM you should go with MBA IT major with fin minor

Hi Peeper,
Thanks for all your previous suggesions..But I have litte doubt..I am a software developer(BE) working in it/telecom domain for last 3 year. Now I admitted in MBA program for 2 years. It will be completed in 2011..Then I will have almost 5 years exp + MBA Degree,Now I have the same problem to decide which stream.few questios in mind...
1.Is it better to go MBA in SYSTEMS (AS MY BACKGROUND IS THAT)?? BUT IT/SYSTEMS market is really down now.. may be it will rise again .but there will be always a insecurity.
2.Finance can be option but I am not of that background..is it will be helpful for me ,question can be rised why leaving my domain !!
3.Marketing .. As I prefer desktop job can it be a good choice!!
Actually In future I have a interest to go in banking industry(If I get chance). if not then as usual IT INDUSTRY..
Please help me ... just waiting for your suggesion yaar..
IndiaInterns 04-17-2009, 10:40 AM Hey,
Specialization in Systems doesn't seam right to me given the fact that you want to go into banking. Finance is a better option.
Also, marketing is not a desktop job. And the differentiation between marketing and sales blurring gradually, it will become more and more outgoing.
jitchatterjee 04-18-2009, 08:09 AM Thanx IndiaInterns :I agree:
rekha.k 05-09-2009, 06:26 PM Hiii ,
Thanks for your suggestion.
Could you please tell me if pgdbm(distance learning) from symbiosis is better than mba through distance learning from amity.
Regards
Rekha
Hi
The best combination will be
IT + Finance
Doesnt matter major or minor. IT people shld do major in IT.
Marketing and finance
Marketing people shld do major in marketing.
it strengthens your core competence and minor adds to extra qualification.
Selectors look for people with strong core competence and reasonable knowledge of finance ultimately everyone shld know managing finance.

bright83 05-26-2009, 01:43 AM Greetings to all!
I am a software professional with 3 yrs of experience.
I have decided to pursue Distance MBA from Symbiosis.
I am very confused on the selection of specialization. As i have heard. MBA in IT and Systems is best suited for me, but unfortunately Symbi is not offering this concentration.
I have following options out of which i have to select any:
1. MARKETING
2. HUMAN RESOURCE
3. FINANCE
4. OPERATIONS
5. CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT
My career goal is to stay in IT industry and I am doing MBA just to accelerate my career growth.
Please help which specialization is best for me.
Thanks a lot!
bright83 05-30-2009, 02:45 AM Hi Jit,
If you wanna go in Banking field, take Finance, otherwise if u want to stay in Telecom domain then take Operations.

dlotus205 10-24-2010, 06:45 AM Whether you want to be a personal investment advisor, or work for a major financial corporation, your MBA in Finance degree program should offer advanced training in forecasts and trending, using up-to-date software tools. You’ll be called upon to thoroughly crunch tax rates, commodity prices, industry trends and the competitive landscape.
A solid advanced financial accounting degree program should focus on equity, debt valuations, profitability ratios, cash flow, stock indexes, mergers and acquisitions, pension plans, mutual funds, gross margins, and terminal value.
You won’t be limited to national borders, either. A solid MBA in Finance degree program should also consider global financial markets, international portfolios, and global trends. In sum, it’s a powerful financial accounting degree that can lead to substantial prestige and responsibility.
