View Full Version : Rankings - Hurts But True - Brand Counts
Anonymous 05-12-2004, 01:31 PM Sweetened water with color added sells as the most popular Brand in the world..no points for guessing this one..
Unfortunate but true 'Brand matters' - whether its sweetened water or B-school.
5 years after passing out from a B-school I couldn't have realized it better...contact any Headunters recruiting for C level executives (CEO, COO etc)...only institutes they have on their Premier list IIMS(K and I not included), XLRI, JBIMS, FMS.
dont get carried away by placement trends of the last couple of years..largely driven by IT and skewing placements at sectoral institutes as NITIE and SPJain..
Go for the Brand..
Hope this benefits any one who doesn't want to learn the hard way..
Honest
Anonymous 05-12-2004, 01:33 PM Ivanhoe,
Kudos to you. Totally agree with you. Arey, forget the IIMs, the most successful leaders are not even MBAs. So, the original poster seems like a big loser to me. If you really have the stuff in you, then there is no way you can subdued. On the other hand, I have seen so many IIMites, full of hot air and very little substance. Needless to say, they have all fallen by the wayside.
Further, as you say, whats the guarentee that IIMs will forever retain their numero uno position. There is already ample evidence of ISB doing much better than the IIMs on many criteria. What with Joshi-onics and all, IIMs totally fall on their face??? Ultimately its your stuff that counts... B-school can give you a door opening... nothing more...
Anonymous 05-12-2004, 01:37 PM Hey Ivanhoe,
Where were you for so long man??? Uff... i think yours is the first genuinely insightful post made in this whole goddam forum. Otherwise, it is teeming with idiots like idiot@idiot.com...
Seriously man, people here either keep recycling the same trash and posting it or are engaged in their favourite pastime of "Lets see who can piss higher" contest.
Anonymous 05-12-2004, 01:39 PM This is a classical case of taking a discussion in the wrong direction to prove a point.
Agreed that a MBA degree is not a necessity for success, but what the original post intended to do was shed light on one category - C level executives.
What the replies have done is to generalise this across all levels and then refute their own claim!
Get a grip on the context guys.
ISBite 05-13-2004, 12:20 PM Just to set the record straight, in my opinion, in the long run, as far as CXO positions go, ISB will be way way ahead of any other b-school. Just to give you an idea, there were a few CFOs who studied with me while I did my MBA in ISB. The most prominent amongst them was the CFO of ASK Raymond James - the renowned US Broking House. And FYI: there was one guy who was directly recruited as the CEO of a small company from campus. Every year, there are a few who are recruited for positions like Country Head etc at very reputed companies. In the first year, it was Bombardier (the third largest Aircraft manufacturer after Boeing and Airbus). In the second year, one of my classmates was recruited as the head of offshore operations of a large IT company. The third year, it was RPG which offered country head position to one of the candidates.
Apart from this, are the many scions of industry families who study in ISB. The names that come offhand are:
The grand daughter of Birla.
The son of Ramesh Gelli, chairman of Global Trust Bank.
A member of Bangur family (who is now heading Shree Cements)
The scion of the Zodiac shirts' family
Mohan Meakins family
There may be some more as well..i dont know all of them...
All these are now gearing up to take on leadership positions in their respective businesses.
Its just a question of time before you see a sizable population of the business leadership coming from ISB alums.
zebra 05-13-2004, 05:03 PM Now tht gioves an anaswer why ISB has highest salry of 20 lakh but an average of just 9 lakh. all thses family scions are getting this 20 lakh plus offers while majority of class is struggling at below 9 lak fter paying 11 lakh fee. while at iiMs , the shisning guys are average middle class ppl
Anonymous 05-13-2004, 06:29 PM ... in case u have any i.e ...
do u think a Birla or Ambani will stand in a queue for a job in a TCS/Infy...
these people are not a part of the placement process and hence, their salaries are not considered as a part of the statistics....
you IIM guys so bloody insecure... U cant admit that there could be a b-school in India which is streets above your cuckoo house institution which churns out diaper clad nitiwts by the thousands each year. read the Business Std article. That says it all...
Anyway around 20% of batch get salary of Rs 4 lak at UISB but still we are best
Anonymous 05-14-2004, 05:45 AM I think they cater to different class of students with their unique pros and cons. Its not fair to say which is better than other.
If u r from an affluent family or u have managed to earn so much that 11 lakhs isnt that big money for u, then u have this dilemma else work hard and crack CAT.
A few randome thoughts -
-If workex. has any relevance to MBA education then ISB has an edge their.
-Having been in IIM for 2 yrs I have one point - how much of learnings imparted in IIMs in 2 yrs can be achieved in 1 yr. MBA course at ISB!!! Considering the best brains are working at IIMs. But then my argument is do we need best brains for MBAs?? What's the use of IIT Comp Sc. graduate to do MBA...
Entrepreneurship I believe would be more prevalent in ISB vis a vis IIMs.
However when it comes to jobs from say I Banks or Consults IIMs will have an upper hand in yrs. to come.
