Prashaant; Yes, you can shift careers to the business analyst profession from an IT selling background. Here is why that is possible and the skill sets required for your career transformation; 1. You can become a business analyst because of the low barrier to entry; Unlike careers in medicine, law and other professions where there are lots of examinations or legal requirements, you don’t have a lot of barriers between you and your business analyst career. So, you don't have specific examinations that you must pass to become a business analyst and as long as you have a college degree, you don't need a lot of extra academic qualifications, which is one less thing for you to bother about. 2. What are the career paths available for business analysts? Some business analysts were traditional software developers or systems analysts who discovered that they liked communicating with stakeholders or users and solving business problems more than they liked talking to machines and solving technical or coding problems. These group of people gave rise to the business analyst career path known as the IT Business Analyst. IT Business Analysts are business analysts with a solid understanding of software development processes or systems and requirements elicitation, validation and management. There is also another group of business analysts known as the domain business analysts. These are business analysts that have specialized in a specific domain or industry like Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Sales, Marketing, Pharma, Telco, Healthcare, etc. Because these business analysts solve the business problems for a specific domain, they're known as Specialists (domain business analysts) unlike the first group of business analysts who are the Generalists (IT Business Analyst). 3. Use Your Sales Domain Experience To Your Advantage. Since you already have IT sales domain experience, you should use it to your advantage by becoming a sales / marketing / crm business analyst and applying for IT sales business analyst jobs. Being in sales has probably taught you a lot about competition or competitive advantage. So, this is why you may need to factor in for your situation. If you apply for finance or insurance business analyst jobs, you will be at a competitive disadvantage because you don’t have finance or insurance domain experience or background. On the other hand, if you apply for Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Marketing, Sales Business Analyst Jobs, you will be able to transfer your current background to your new business analyst career, get credit for your current years of IT sales and at the same time transition into a business analyst job by adding on the additional skills that are not native to your skill sets I hope that you found my answers helpful. I will be glad to answer those questions for you; There are several prerequisites for becoming a business analyst because a business analyst needs to have a suite of technical, analytic, communication (verbal and written), interpersonal / soft skills (meeting facilitation, interviewing), presentation, problem solving, modeling and business-oriented skills and industry / domain knowledge. i. Requirements Management and Requirements Documentation Skills for Business Analysts; A business analyst has to elicit, validate, model, document the requirements (business, technical, functional) for a system or project. ii. Software Skill Requirements for Business Analysts; A business analysts bridges the gap between the business and the technical team. Some organizations require light software development skills from BAs including database design or development or data analysis skills, user interface (UI) documentation, design or prototyping skills, quality assurance / testing skills, HTML coding skills. iii. Communication Skill Requirements for Business Analysts; A business analyst needs to communicate clearly and effectively and be comfortable relating to both the business team (stakeholders, customers, project sponsors, business owners) and technical team (e.g. software developers, data architects, graphic designers, database developers) iv. Domain Skill Requirements for Business Analysts; A business analyst who chooses not to become an IT Business will need strong business exposure to a particular domain. There are several domains or specializations available to business analyst and the right one for you will depend on industry background, market demand, learning curve, accessibility of knowledge or subject matter experts. Sarat, I hope that was helpful. I'll be glad to answer any questions you may have about "becoming a business analyst" for you :-) naveenscms 10-13-2009, 09:03 PM Hi buddy It gives me an immense pleasure to bea part of the forum. A business analyst is one who analyses a business and aims to better it With the use of INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY. he is employed by a company and has a team of software developers to assist him. The business anaylist has to know the workings of the industry in which the client's business falls under so that he can fulfill his client's needs and specification from the project. To understand the specifications , from a business perspective as the client would think of them, a business analyst needs to be aware of the norms, laws, working, competitors, software, technical know-how, rules, procedures of the industry and the client's business in particular. ----------------- Avyakt Murli Vanguard Business School nitesh negi 07-17-2011, 08:05 PM hi !!! please help me on this.I have completed b.tech in petroleum engineering in june this year.I was campus recruited at infosys. They told us that we would be given a job profile of business analyst after 1 year training (like domain consultant for oil and gas projects,i find this appealing and promising so i didn’t sat for core companies) .They are calling me on january next year so i’ve this six months to spare. What should I do in this meantime? 1.) Do a course which would benefit me in future(SAP? or?) i’m not rich enough to go for expensive courses (like >20000) in india. 2.)Prepare for MBA? like Gmat (score valid for 5 years),work and after 3-4 years do MBA.Though i’m competent i’m not sure about getting a good college given the competition in India. 3.) In some companies, the BA plays a technical role with very little business knowledge; while in other companies, the BA has a full understanding of the business with very little knowledge of the IT systems and architecture. In today's times - the BA has come to become a person of great value to an organization, and who is a generalist capable of functioning competently in diverse roles. Typically, these people have a broad educational background and a diverse skill set with a wide range of work experience in different jobs and industries. In essence, they are able to visualize the "big picture" - that is - understand the business from different perspectives, as well as the technology side of what can be effectively used to improve the business. The Business Analyst Skills in a broad perspective comprises of the person being a Business Planner, Systems Analyst, Project Manager, Subject Area Expert, Organization Analyst, Financial Analyst, Technology Architect, Data Analyst, Application Analyst, Application Designer, and Process Analyst. May this helps you! Many employers believe that candidates with certifications are better than those without. The reality is that much of the value from any certification comes from the process you go through having to learn the key concepts needed to pass the given exam. You can join any Business analysis training program which is approved from 'IIBA, International Institute of Business Analysis We ANISAN Technologies specializes in providing training in Business Analysis.
