i m BE computer science from rohilkhand university barielly
i secured 62% in engg

i am working with a engg company in delhi
it is not a very big company. i am working there as a Sr. consultant and project leader.

i joined there as computer programmer but after 10 months of job there was an internal training and i was shifted to consultancy dept. My job is of middle management.

i am planning t go to us next year fall session
by the time i'll be going there i'll have 37 months of work ex

but i havent applied to any universities till now

the reason being i have visited many consultants for application prosessing, they all are saying that the admission will be confirmed
but every one is showing a different picture

someone is saying that i shoud apply to top 10
one says that it should be looking at top 25

some one says that they take hardly any indian in top 50 and the one the take are toppers of the university and that too with 750+ gmat

i am totally confused
pls guide me which all universites should i apply to and if there is any good consultant or website from where all this info. is available pls let me know.

thanks

Hey Gaurav,

The way this GMAT/MBA advisory business works is that most 'consultants' you would meet, are essentially paid agents of lower ranked schools-they get compensated for every candidate they solicit. So chances are that you would get advice that is biased.

Assuming that you met the genuine, here is why they differ:

Most big or small B-school typically have 10% of their intake consisting of students of Indian origin. This may vary from school to school but the variance is marginal. The average GMAT scores would obviously vary by school but in general, the scores have been falling recently.

More importantly, the GMAT is not the only criterion that schools look for. If you can highlight other areas of your background i.e. work experience, community service, extra-curricular activities, etc., you could still entice enough interest amongst the admission committees'.

I would personally advice you to do the initial search yourself and then seek out advice on structuring your applications. There are several web resources to identify schools, their rankings, specialisations, average scores, student profiles, financing arrangements, their back grounds, etc.

In making your short-list keep the following in mind to identify fit.
1. Your career aspirations
2. Choice of where you would like to work, post-MBA
3. Your financial considerations
4. Your academics and GMAT scores

Having decided upon on your choice, write to the chosen schools asking for student references or alumni who may be willing to help in understanding the school better.

You could then seek advice on structuring your applications from genuine consultants. Your best bet to identify a good consultant is to write to respondents on this forum or other such forums/yahoo groups and seek information from those who may have used them in the past.

Hope I have been able to answer your query. Wish you the very best in your endeavours.

Hey Sachin,

Unfortunately being out of India since the last 1.5 years, it is very difficult for me to advise on specific coaching institutions that you could go to. Most of these GMAT coaching institutes will also be able to tell you the names of the universities you can go to, without experience.

All I can say is that such schools are extremely poor in the quality of education that you get from them and the prospects of finding jobs are exceedingly difficult having undertaken an MBA from such institutions. If however you have decided to go on, then look for alternatives in the UK as well. Spending 2-3 years working before applying will totally change your perspective on the MBA.

Hi Jayswami,

With work experience it ultimately comes down to the quality of work experience. Yes, names matter but quality supercedes brand.
Your 59% might trouble you more than your work experience problem, but carefully played, you should be able to overcome it. A good GMAT and TOEFL score will help.
