NPA in India is managed by a special cells in bank & FIs and these days trend is to sell these NPAs to Asset reconstruction Companies as after introduction of SICA it is much easier for banks & FIs to dispose assets in a more productive manner.

For ex UTI has a special cell call Stressed Asset Manangement Cell so does ICICI. You can also check out the website of ARCIL that is Asset Reconstruction Company India Ltd which has been jointly promoted by ICICI Allahabad bank and UTI ( i am not very sure on promoters).

Hi

Arvind Mills is one of the glaring example. They had huge debts and managed well with FIs.

FOr more case studies you need to look at Corporate India more closely. Lot of steel companies, Modi group etc have bed debts which they sold and got it recovered. as far as banks goes, IFCI is the one having largest NPA. also check out Finance articles in Knowledge Zone.
